KOREAN BEAUTY SECRETS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO CUTTING-EDGE SKINCARE AND MAKEUP

KBSTBW
It’s officially official, we wrote a book! Like an actual one, that you can hold, and buy, and that would look so incredibly cute on your coffee table.

I’m going to take the words from my co-author and soul sister Kerry (Skin & Tonics), and let her give you her take on it before I put in my two cents 😀

We set out to create a book that would be useful, interesting, and fun for complete newcomers to K-beauty as well as the more experienced, and I wholeheartedly believe we accomplished that task. It has everything you need to know to assemble a Korean style skincare routine, including :
• Detailed information on each skincare product categories
• How to assess and address your skincare needs
• Tips for determining layering order
• Shopping and ingredient cheat sheets organized by skin concern
• Ingredient definitions
• Detailed example skincare routines by several of our favorite bloggers
• Nearly 250 English-Korean ingredient translationsIt also features:• An amazingly thorough makeup section that provides detailed descriptions of all the different makeup categories
• Guides to achieving some truly beautiful Korean-inspired makeup looks.
• A lot of gorgeous photography

One area where Coco and I were particularly fortunate is that we were given full control over the book’s content and design. Being given design control is not typical in the traditional publishing industry, so this was a really big deal for us! Coco art directed the photoshoots, and I handled the layout and information design. We both developed the cover design. The finished product is a beautiful, glossy, full-color, hardcover. If you don’t want to wait for November to order it, you canpre-order it on Amazon and receive it the day it’s released (November 3, 2015).

I’m so excited to introduce you guys to this book. It’s coming out in Nov, but like Kerry said above, it’s available on Amazon right now for preorder, which you can also access via the link on the sidebar of the homepage. I’m so proud of everything and I’d like to give a special shoutout to the stellar team we put together to bring you this baby. Truly, it was a labor of love, and I think you might love it just as much as we do.And like I said, it’s going to set your coffee table off so very nice 😉

SKINFOOD SALMON DARK CIRCLE CONCEALER CREAM REVIEW

skinfoodsalmon
Concealer is one of the most important products in our makeup lineups, it’s also one of the trickiest. We all have that seemingly impossible wishlist for our concealers that goes something like: must have great coverage, must not settle into lines, must not be cakey, and must look like a natural under eye concealer.

I, like a lot of other fair skinned people, have dark circles no matter what, leaving sufferes to reach for serums on sites like https://www.buymellow.com/shop/beauty/love-mellow-cbd-eye-serum-10ml-roller-with-50mg-of-cannabidiol/ to save them. Being stressed and tired exacerbates the problem, but even under optimal conditions the purple shines through. That’s just the nature of the tissue thin skin under the eye if you don’t have a lot of colour to block out the blood vessels underneath. As if that wasn’t bad enough, things get a little worse since I’m at the stage in life where fine lines are an issue. That means traditional liquid concealers can migrate into those bastards and make for an unflattering creased look. The problem with a lot of other cream concealers are that they’re cakey as all hell, and scream to the world that you’re wearing very obvious cover-up. It’s enough to leave most people frustrated and hopeless when it comes to finding the right product to get the job done.

Thankfully, I found Skinfood Salmon Dark Circle Concealer Cream. It’s is exactly what it says it is, a cream type concealer that specifically address dark circles. It’s rich, creamy formulation comes housed in a little pot with a screw top lid. I have used quite a few different types of concealer in my time and I have found that formulas geared towards mature skin tend to work best for me, so I was excited to give this one a try.

The texture is buttery and smooth, it melts and softens slightly when it comes into contact with your body heat, which makes it blend wonderfully. It’s a very emollient cream, which is the best news ever if you’re worried about your concealer settling into fine lines. However, this may be a downside for you if you’ll be the subject of flash photography, as the light reflecting properties are exaggerated by the flash. However this can be tempered with a light dusting of powder and it’s not something that’s visible anywhere but in pictures. You won’t notice it during the course of a regular day or night out. The coverage is excellent, the salmon undertones do a great job of cancelling out the blue and purple tones of dark circles.

My only complaint is this is only available in two shades, #1 and #2. I’m using #1 here which looks dark in the pot but actually suits my NC15-NC25 (depending on the season) skin perfectly, no matter if I’m at my darkest or my lightest. If you fluctuate between NC25 and a darker shade, #2 might be a better fit for you, depending on what you’re going for (some people like a might lighter concealer shade under the eye, some like natural).

The wear time is great, it’s never let me down and lasts throughout my day and into the night. Although, I do not have oily skin, so I can’t vouch for it’s performance if that’s your condition. But as far as normal to dry skin goes, this does have great lasting power. I really love this product! It’s a totally different animal than the Missha concealer I reviewed before, this is a thicker, moisturizing, type product that will serve me well in the upcoming Fall/Winter seasons. I’m so glad I gave it a try! Without a doubt I will definitely be repurchasing this item. With it’s well under $15 price tag and stellar performance, how could I not? Well done, Skinfood!

SKINFOOD BLACK SUGAR CLEANSING OIL

skinfoodblacksugarcleansingoil

When I bring up oil cleansing as part of a two step cleansing process to people, more than half of the time they scrunch up their face at me and tell me that don’t have time for that. Some people are too obtuse to reason with, but those of us who are on the two step cleansing train already know how great it is. Stubborn waterproof makeup, sunblock, bb cream, mascara, all gone in a gentle instant. If you’re not already doing the two step cleansing routine, you should definitely be at least willing to give it a try. I’m almost positive you’ll never go back to doing things the old way! I’ve tried a variety of oil and sherbet cleansers, the most recent being Skinfood Black Sugar Cleansing Oil.

Let me start by telling you what I love about this particular oil cleanser, the pump. It has a long narrow hooked spout that perfectly dispenses what can sometimes be a messy product. Each time you depress the pump it gives you the perfect amount. The oil itself is, well, oily of course. I put it on my dry face and gently massage away my makeup. I find this works wonders on my insanely stubborn Tony Moly gel eyeliner and waterproof mascaras.

As effective as this cleansing oil  is you might think you would have a hard time rinsing it clean. Absolutely not! It rinses clean with minimal effort. After you’ve used and rinsed away this oil cleanser, you follow up with your normal cream or foaming cleanser.

My sole complaint about this is the scent. Since it’s called Black Sugar one would assume it would smell, well, sugary. At the very least somewhere on the baked goods scale, but nope, this stuff smells like straight up PineSol. It has the most misleading name ever! It’s so lemony and antiseptic scented that as great as this stuff works, I find myself dreading using it. That being said, scent preference is so subjective, someone else might absolutely love the smell, this is just a personal opinion of mine. The product itself works great, the dispenser is great, the scent is it’s only negative.

SKIN FOOD VITA WATER DROP CC CREAM REVIEW

SkinfoodVitaWaterDropCC

Skin Food Vita Water Drop CC Cream is an odd little duck in the CC cream world. Despite coming in two differently decorated tubes, this CC creams it comes in only one colour. Unlike most other CC creams, this one is not self adjusting. The single shade is a neutral apricot colour, so if that doesn’t work for you, you’re pretty much out of luck on this one 🙁

The coverage is sheerer than the Tony Moly Pure Luminous Aura CC and the formula is water based so it’s less emollient. This would definitely be appreciated by oily skinned folks, but it’s not drying so drier skinned people would still like it as well. When I first received this product I was kind of put off by it. It smelled a little funky (I still can’t place the smell, its like vaguely grassy chemicals) and I was so used to my other CC cream that this different formula was just strange to me. But I have to be honest I do find myself reaching for this a lot more often then I thought I would. I could see myself really appreciating this formula in Summer.

Like I said above, the cover on this is extremely sheer. It does almost nothing to cover any redness or hyper-pigmentation you might have. It does however create a smooth surface for BB cream or foundation. As always with CC creams, if you have smooth blemish free skin you could definitely wear this alone. It also contains SPF 35 PA+++ so that’s a plus. I don’t quite know how to rate this cream! I keep changing my mind about it. I’m going to go with 3.5 out of 5 turtles, but somedays it’s a 4. This retails for under $15 in most online stores so it’s not that big of risk to give it a try!
