23 YEARS OLD ROSEGOLD 24 MASK REVIEW

Hello internets! I’m alive! First of all, I know I’ve been away for an embarrassingly long stretch of time. But you know how life happens. Also there are so many other wonderful bloggers out there now that are killing it, it’s been easy to sit back and transition into a reader instead of a writer. But it’s not like I’m retired! I still write, even more than before hoenstly. I’ve been super busy working as a contributing editor at the new BeautyTap.com. I’m proud of the line-up of talent over there and I feel so very lucky to be included. Really, the writing and editing team there is amazing. So if for some crazy reason you’ve missed my reviews and writing, or just want to see what I’m up to these days, you can check out my stories and reviews here.

I said it would take something big to get me to finally update, and well, I finally found some products that really lit a fire under my ass.

23 Years Old Rosegold 24 Mask.

I picked this mask up on a total whim while shopping at my local K-beauty store with my bestie. She is always enabling my purchases (much to the chagrin of my wallet) but this time I am really grateful she was there cheering me on because I probably would have ended up putting it back before I got to the checkout. It initially caught my eye because of the unique packaging, but I’ve been burned by that before so I wasn’t really expecting all that much in terms of results. Imagine my surprise when that sucker brought me the moon and the stars and all the orbiting planets.

I have never tried anything from this brand before. The name 23 Years Old made me think that it wasn’t going to have much to appeal to me. If you inverted the numbers, I’m still older than the brand name. I understand it’s probably an aspirational name but I’m not out here trying to look 23 years old, just like a better version of myself.

Straight out of the package this mask has serious weight. It is HEAVY, and I mean that in the best way possible.

The mask material (which they call Tension Fibre) is as thick as if it were a quilt. It’s straight up like a blanket for your face, and it’s just as cozy. There’s something about the heft and weight of this that makes the masking experience that much more grounding and comforting. It feels serious and it is serious. I also love the shape and size of it. It has a fuller fit and covers down to almost the neck on me. It really hugs the whole face, the weight of the fibre easily keeping it down flush with the skin. I also LOVE that it doesn’t have a mouth hole. First of all, I don’t have to talk to anyone while I’m wearing, second of all I’m so happy that my lips are getting the same benefits as the rest of my face.

This mask is absolutely bursting with essence. You can wring it out, put it on your face, and it will still stay juicy for well over half an hour. You definitely have more than enough in your mask pouch to put on some high quality cotton pads and ‘re-mask’ that night or even the next day if you store it in the fridge. The essence itself is thick and damn near completely opaque. It’s very substantial and not very watery, almost like a cream-gel serum. The first time I used the mask I set my timer for 20 minutes, by the time it was done the mask wasn’t even kind of dried out yet. That thick material does a lot of hold onto and slowly disseminate the serum.

I decided to let the mask linger for another 10-15 minutes because it just felt so damn nice and I could tell my skin was soothed and happy. I just felt good.  I could tell I was on the express train to tchok-tchok world.

Y’all when I took that mask off, my skin was G L O W I N G. I’m not even kidding, my skin was so plumped up and dewy, it legitimately looked like a week’s worth of good sleep, a facial, perfect genes, and a blood sacrifice to the Gods. My skin was poppin’. I was floored. Dehydration was gone, fine lines were filled, ex boyfriends wept. The serum sinks in really well, there was some leftover that had to be patted in, but it wasn’t anything at all unmanageable. I did the rest of my routine as normal and I could not stop looking at myself in the mirror. I realize that on the internet I’m like that character Wilson from Home Improvement, always obscuring my face (I’m incredibly uncomfortable with having my picture taken and camera shy!) but even I had to snap a few (still obscured!) pictures of myself when I was out later that day because I was so taken with the glow and brightness my skin was serving. Despite how much I hate selfies, this had to be documented.

I have dry skin and we’re still in winter here, but my oilier skinned friend loved this mask as much as I did. It also played nicely under my makeup, which I didn’t expect when I saw how thick the essence was. I would say this is good for just about any skin type. If you’re super oily and it’s the summer maybe save this for nighttime, other than that I’d say this is a free for all for anyone who wants to try it at any time.

Ingredients:
Water, Glycerin, Dipropylene Glycol, Rosa Centifolia Flower Water, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Butylene Glycol, Centella Asiatica Extract, Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract, Polysorbate 60, 1,2-Hexanediol, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Glyceryl Stearate, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Glyceryl Caprylate, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Carbomer, Ethylhexylglycerin, Potassium Hydroxide, Sodium Polyacrylate, Gardenia Florida Fruit Extract, Methyl Glucose Sesquistearate, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Rose Flower Oil, Gold, Disodium EDTA

I assumed this was going to be just another run of the mill gylcerin based mask like most are, but this thing really feels completely different. There’s not really anything super crazy magical in the ingredients that makes my heart skip a beat when I read the ingredients, so I can’t quite figure out exactly that it is that makes it so special. There’s the obvious Centella Asiatica Extract, which has proven wound healing properties, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract which calms the skin, and Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract which is an antioxidant. But none of these explain how incredibly delightful this thing feels though! Like, I can’t even deal with how much I love how it makes my skin feel. Is it the thick tension fibre? Is everything just in such perfect harmony that it’s created a pool of heaven in a mask? I don’t know or even care at this point, just keep ’em coming. I’ve already bought 20 of them, no joke.

I put this mask on again today at 6am and it’s now 8pm and my face is still hydrated AF. You are getting all of my coins, 23 Years Old Rosegold 24 Mask.

One thing though, I’m so mad because all of the masks I previous thought were pretty good are trash now and have to live up to this one. Speaking of, there is one more mask that I fell in love with on the same day I discovered this one that performed just as well! I’ll be updating you about it soon!

2018 might well be the year of the mask.

GOODAL FIRMING CAMELLIA WATER OIL REVIEW

Well here we are. We’ve reached 2017 and are in the icy grip of winter.  While I was wishing for a white Christmas full of snowflakes, I wanted to avoid a white face full of skinflakes.

One of the products that has really helped me keep in my moisture barrier’s good books is Goodal Firming Camellia Water Oil. This is a sister product of Goodal’s beloved Waterest Oil. And like the classic Waterest, this plumps, protects, and undoes your naughtiest skin sins. It particularly stands out for being able to do all of that without the greasy tacky feeling you’d typically get from traditional oils and oil blends.

As far as the firming claims, ehhh. I largely ignore anything that claims it’s going to firm my face (sorry bout it, nothing topical can really do that, if you want firm get a mini facelift or some strategically placed fillers). That goes for the “slowing down aging claim” as well. There’s nothing in here that is going to straight up slow down aging, the only thing that I can confidently claim will do that is being vigilant with your sunblock. However this will plump and get rid of dehydration lines, which can give the illusion of firming your skin for as long as you’re using it. What this really does, and does well, is fortify your moisture barrier and hydrate like a superstar.

As you can see this is a clear, light liquid, with a little more slip than just plain water, but lighter than even a heavy serum. It sinks in almost instantly and doesn’t leave behind a tacky feeling.

Let’s look at the goodies in the ingredient list.
One thing I really like about this Camelia version as opposed to the classic Waterest oil is the exclusion of the potentially problematic lemon oil, which is a photosynthesizing oil (you can read about photosynthesizing oils here https://moonhaven.com.au/never-apply-photosensitising-oil-before-going-into-the-sun/ ) . The only red flags are infinitesimally small ones, it’s butylene glycol and dimethicone which score a 1 as a potential acne trigger. Some people do not like dimethicone in products and I normally am not a fan but I don’t even notice it in this despite it being pretty high on the list. I don’t know what kind of witchcraft they used when making this, but it clearly worked and I wish more products felt and worked like this. I love love love that the first ingredient is Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate, a longtime favourite of mine that helps restore radiance and give life to dull skin.

The biggest plus in my opinion is the inclusion of camellia. It’s something I’ve raved about in both the Illi Total Age Care line, and the Blossom Jeju Pink Camellia Soombi line. And camellia is not just some pretty smell, it’s an important ingredient that’s been used in Korean beauty since antiquity. It boasts high antioxidant content and is rich in omega 6 and omega 9 fatty acids. If I could only use one oil for the rest of my life it’d be camellia oil, that’s how much I love it. I also love it’s delicate floral scent, which this product has. It just makes everything that much more of a joy to use.

If you’re wondering exactly where a product like this is going to fit in, it’s going to be your serum step. If you have oily skin and have always wanted to try the benefits of an oil (which are many!) but you just can’t stand the texture and feel, this is definitely the product for you. If you have dry skin and need some muscle that help keep dryness and dehydration at bay, this is also a must have for you. This product straight up saved my skin when I was in my last trimester of pregnancy and shortly after I gave birth. I had a whole slew of complications that left me unable to move around much. I was pretty much bed bound and in and out of the hospital. My skin was suffering and the temperatures were dropping. I have chronically dry skin and was at a point where I could only get up and do my full routine once a day. To stave off the dryness I’d apply a liberal amount of this water oil twice a day and it totally worked. In fact, if you are someone looking to simplify your routine and just want to do a double cleanse, serum, and emulsion, let this be your serum choice for winter! It’s such a well rounded product, I’ve personally recommended it to my friends. I just love it to bits and everyone who has tried it has said the same!

PREGNANCY SKINCARE GUIDE: THE FIRST TRIMESTER

pregnancy-skincare-guide
If you follow me on Instagram, you may know that my husband and I welcomed our second (enormous 10.2 pound) child 7 weeks ago. Throughout my pregnancy, I made note of my routine and documented the changes in my skincare regime as time passed. Now that I’ve come through to the postpartum side, I’ve broken down my changing routines for each trimester. Today is the first in a three-part series.

Pregnancy is a time to really pause and take stock of the self-care and pampering you can do for yourself. You’re forced to slow down in almost every area of your life, and there can be a real beauty in that. During pregnancy, you’re hyper-aware of everything going on in your body, and there are challenges that come with each trimester. But the most important thing to realize is that this is your time, things are about to get chaotic, so please indulge yourself. You’re growing a whole other human in your body, pamper yourself! You deserve this, mama! If you’re experiencing a pregnancy currently, please take this as a hint to slow down and take time to care for yourself. However, if there are women here who are struggling to get pregnant, don’t worry. These days, there are a lot of things that can be used to increase your chances of getting pregnant. For example, by using some ovulation strips from Countrywide Testing (learn more here), women can find out when they’re ovulating, increasing their chances of conceiving and becoming pregnant. Hopefully, that will help you to become a mother! But, be prepared for the side effects of pregnancy!

First Trimester:
Ugh, this might just be the worst time. You’re beyond exhausted, everything makes you sick, and you have no idea why. You are keenly aware of how long the road ahead of you is, and you might feel discouraged and just plain yucky. You still look the same, but my god, you do not feel the same. The first trimester is when I had to seriously alter my routine because of severe morning sickness. Scents that I usually tolerated or even loved were just too much for me. I gagged at just about everything. I had to seriously scale back and go super boring. However, boring can still be effective, and you can still sneak in some much-needed pampering.

Cleansers:
Foaming:
I had to forgo my usuals and go back to basics with the CerAve Foaming Facial Cleanser. The reason? It’s pretty much fragrance-free, it has the proper 5.5 pH we all know and love, and it gets the job done efficiently while being exceptionally mild.
Grab your CerAve in a two pack at Amazon here or as an add on item for only $8 here
Also available for a great price at Ulta hereOil/Sherbet:
Trying to find a fragrance free or lightly scented oil cleanser was a harder job, I had to just find a scent I was OK with and go from there. I ended up using the old school standard Banila Co Clean It Zero balm, which is good, but no longer a favourite of mine as the market has exploded with great, new, innovative, cleansers since then. But Clean it Zero didn’t smell offensive, and it got the job done, which is all you want when you’re dying to sleep and not throw up again.

Toner: Same criteria for cleansers, please don’t stink, and please work nicely. What fit the bill? Nooni Sprout Smoothing Toner. This is a great little basic toner that contains some wonderful natural ingredients and reminds me a bit of the Mizon AHA BHA toner in terms of effectiveness (remember, the AHA BHA toner does not actually exfoliate). While not entirely without fragrance, the Nooni Sprout Smoothing Toner has a very delicate fresh scent that disappears almost immediately upon application. It’s a great option for people with sensitive skin and I enjoyed using it. It can be difficult knowing what toners are best for exfoliating and what is best in general for the health of your skin, especially through pregnancy; you can learn more when you visit blog.reneerouleau.com. This is useful information for all skin types and for all people wondering how to improve their skin properly, whether pregnant or not.

Acid:
Consult your doctor before using acids during pregnancy. I’ve heard varying things from various doctors, but personally, my doctor said a BHA 2% and below would be safe, so I went with that. (and my son is just fine, so I guess it really was safe for me). I used Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant all over my face at night to treat the very mild breakouts I was having. I didn’t want to stress my skin or moisture barrier too much so I left it at that. What I love about the Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, is the addition of green tea extract to soothe and the Methylpropanediol which helps the BHA penetrate while leaving your skin feeling moist. That’s an important feature to someone with dry skin sitting around for the allotted 10-20 minutes you have to wait for it to work before proceeding on with the rest of your routine. Without that, I’d dry up like a mummy. There is also a gel version that a lot of oilier skin folks love. After the BHA I’d try to get my pamper on by slipping on a sheet mask. My favourite was Soo Ae Freeset Donkey Milk Skin Gel Mask Aqua. Free of harsh fragrance and full of a buffet of excellent skincare ingredients. It both relaxed me, and gave me another 20 minutes of laying in my bed before getting up and having to complete the rest of my routine. Yes, the mask and BHA added another 40 minutes to my routine, but that was 40 minutes of me just laying there collecting my thoughts, daydreaming, and thinking about all the great things to come.
pregnancy-guide-serum
Essence:
My beloved Shark Sauce all the way. I usually do multiple essences and serums, but I was just not up for the task for the first three months. Thank the skincare gods for Shark Sauce being such a powerhouse, it really carried my skin on through the tough times and brought me out to the other side still glowing.
pregnancy-guide-emulsion
Emulsion:
Again, hard to find a formula I liked with no scent, so I ended up sticking with what I had been using before, Cosrx OIL-FREE Ultra-Moisturizing Lotion with Birch Sap. While this is fragranced, I was lucky enough that it was a fragrance that didn’t turn my stomach. If you’ve ever smelled Aveda’s Sap Moss shampoo, that is the scent almost exactly, only milder. It’s a very earthy scent and thankfully I love earthy scents and for some reason it didn’t set me off. I have a complete review of this product in the pipeline, but I will say that I absolutely love this product. I’m still using it to this day.

Oil:
I spent my first trimester in the midst of a really frigid winter, so as wonderful as my Cosrx oil-free lotion is, it wasn’t cutting it for my dry skin all alone. Keep in mind I was out walking in temperatures like -20 with nasty winds whipping around, so this is not knocking the Cosrx at all, it was just used in extreme conditions. To supplement my lotion I would alternate between adding Holy Snails Perseids Oil or Whamisa Organic Flowers Facial Oil (get 15% off your order with my referral code http://i.refs.cc/Mxk05ta7 !), two excellent oil blends. Sometimes I would apply it directly on the face and sometimes I’d mix it right in with Cosrx lotion depending on how I was feeling. They both worked great! If your skin isn’t dry like mine, or if you’re going through a summertime pregnancy, feel free to skip this step, but for me it was a necessity. Both of these oils are almost entirely without a funky smell, unlike a lot of other oils that I regularly use. I was thankful they worked perfectly without any offensive odour. I have heard of other expectant moms who have had great success with combining oil with a derma roller to give them a glowy complexion.ljh-tea-tree-cream
Cream:
LJH Tea Tree 80 Cream
With early pregnancy sometimes comes hormonal acne, with acne comes irritation. Hit back with it’s arch enemy, tea tree. LJH Tea Tree 80 Cream is made with 80% tea tree extract, a powerful combatant of irritation, and natural antiseptic. Tea tree oils and extracts have been used since ancient times to treat cuts, abrasions, and other maladies of the skin, it’s got a serious track record. I was happy to have a no nonsense cream that would address hydration as well as the trouble my poor hormonal skin was facing. This cream did it all, and I couldn’t have been happier with it.
Available at Memebox here (where at the time of publication, is on sale for $35!)

And for Canadians at Bisou here So that sums up my first three months! Everyone’s experiences vary, but this routine is what worked for me and my particular needs and concerns. Remember, you don’t have to be pregnant to enjoy these products, every single one of them are top notch, knocked up or not 😉

TSA FRIENDLY K-BEAUTY TRAVEL BUDDIES

kbeautytravel
Traveling for the holidays? Need to save your sanity so you can stockpile it to deal with crazy family? While the TSA is there to keep you safe while you fly, they’re also largely ridiculous with their hassle and rules. There are liquid limits and inspections galore as you snake through those impossible lines. Moreover, it is because of the potential delays that dealing with airport security can cause that some frequent flyers prefer to travel via private jet. Correspondingly, you can learn more about the benefits of flying via private jet by taking a look at this page. Anyway, if you are going to be traveling with a commercial airline, you certainly don’t want to slack on your skincare regime as you’re traveling, but you also want to streamline your inspection experience and make it easier on everyone. I’ve gathered some of my K-Beauty favs that will do just that, all while keeping your skin in great shape with no skimping. Just because it has to fit in your carry-on doesn’t mean you can’t keep your high standards and expectations for your skincare.

Even if you aren’t flying, you never have to worry about leaks, spills, or hefty bag cargo with these products as you travel via the rails or roads. These are also great if you ever find yourself having to pack a hospital bag (woohoo special delivery!). And while this is a temporary, truncated version of the multi-step skincare regime you probably already have in place, it’s effective enough not to leave you high and dry in the short term.

cosrx-holy-moly-sheet-mask
Get sheet-faced

(Phrasing borrowed from those wonderful gals over at the Snailcast) I’m a nervous flyer. I’m also a nervous train taker. Hell. I’m even a nervous bus rider. Ok, maybe I’m just a neurotic ball of stress. I could use the self care while traveling, both mental and physical. What’s the best way to combat the nasty recirculated dry ass air sucking the life out of your skin while you’re just trying to arrive safely? A sheet mask. The sheet mask has exploded in popularity in the last few years. So much so that you won’t even get the old “call the air marshals there is a crazy person on this plane” looks that one used to get back in the day. Now you can indulge without judgement (or with little judgement, who cares, fuck those people). Since the air is particularly harsh and dehydrating, and traveling is sometimes a really stressful event, I always try to use a exceptionally luxurious masks on trips. The Whamisa Organic Sea Kelp Facial Sheet Mask (available for 15% off your order if you order via my referral code http://i.refs.cc/Mxk05ta7 )is still a favourite of mine. A new favourite that would be great in these situations is the Cosrx Holy Moly Snail Mask. The Cosrx Holy Moly Snail Mask is a juicy hydration bomb with it’s pretty peach coloured rayon sheet and star ingredients like red ginseng water, snail filtrate, and my best friend camellia oil. These two masks are enriching enough to temporarily take over your toner and essence step. So, sit back, get your sheet on, and try to forget that guy next to you keeps stealing the armrest.

Sum37 Miracle Rose Cleansing Stick
Sometimes you can’t do better than a classic. The MRCS is an old friend to most of us by now. (read my old review here). I much prefer traveling with this stick rather than a sherbet cleanser. It’s just so much more practical. In addition to being slimmer and taking up less space, the rose scent acts as a sort of aroma therapy. Great for de-stressing and centring yourself during a hectic trip.

DR. ORACLE The Snow Queen Enzyme Powder Wash
Snow Queen? How fitting for this holiday season. This white powder transforms into a foaming cleanser with the addition of water. Not since cocaine addicts disappearing into the bathroom for quick snort has white powder left someone looking so refreshed and perked up. It cleans beautifully and transports easily. Oily skins will especially appreciate this cleanser since it washes away the oil and grime that tends to accumulate while being trapped on whatever kind of steel tube you’re traveling on. Since this is a powder you never have to worry about the pump getting depressed and leaking cleanser all over the place. I can’t vouch for it saving you from getting depressed after that one sassy aunt comments on how you’re not getting any younger, but you really can’t lose with this cleanser. Lock it down and hydrate
J.One cream
Ok you’ve cleansed, you’ve gotten your essence and hydration via your sheet mask. It’s time to lock it all in and reenforce that glow with a cream. I always feel like I’m wasting product when I decant creams for travel. If you don’t use everything you’ve decanted, it’s now contaminated and leaves residue on the jar that you really don’t feel like cleaning once you’re finally home. It just annoys me to no end. Not only does the J.One cream eliminate the residue and decanting hassle, it comes in solid little single use balls, so you can measure out exactly how many you need depending on how many days you’ll be away. And, if you don’t end up using them all, back in the big jar they go! No fuss no muss. In addition to being so darn perfect for travel, it’s a solid kick-ass cream. The texture is wonderful, it hydrates like a champion, and it’s suitable for both oily and dry skin. Your skin will look plump and beautiful, unlike that bitch that made your life hell in high school. You know, the one that you will inevitably run into when your Mom sends you to Target for last minute napkins?

Traveling is stressful, so don’t forget to take care of yourself. Besides, you’ll want to look your best, especially if you’re heading back to your hometown for the holidays. With these little skincare lifesavers, you’ll debark with confidence knowing that you’re fresh as hell and ready to face whatever racist uncle’s dinner table rant awaits.
