KOREAN BEAUTY SECRETS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO CUTTING-EDGE SKINCARE AND MAKEUP

KBSTBW
It’s officially official, we wrote a book! Like an actual one, that you can hold, and buy, and that would look so incredibly cute on your coffee table.

I’m going to take the words from my co-author and soul sister Kerry (Skin & Tonics), and let her give you her take on it before I put in my two cents 😀

We set out to create a book that would be useful, interesting, and fun for complete newcomers to K-beauty as well as the more experienced, and I wholeheartedly believe we accomplished that task. It has everything you need to know to assemble a Korean style skincare routine, including :
• Detailed information on each skincare product categories
• How to assess and address your skincare needs
• Tips for determining layering order
• Shopping and ingredient cheat sheets organized by skin concern
• Ingredient definitions
• Detailed example skincare routines by several of our favorite bloggers
• Nearly 250 English-Korean ingredient translationsIt also features:• An amazingly thorough makeup section that provides detailed descriptions of all the different makeup categories
• Guides to achieving some truly beautiful Korean-inspired makeup looks.
• A lot of gorgeous photography

One area where Coco and I were particularly fortunate is that we were given full control over the book’s content and design. Being given design control is not typical in the traditional publishing industry, so this was a really big deal for us! Coco art directed the photoshoots, and I handled the layout and information design. We both developed the cover design. The finished product is a beautiful, glossy, full-color, hardcover. If you don’t want to wait for November to order it, you canpre-order it on Amazon and receive it the day it’s released (November 3, 2015).

I’m so excited to introduce you guys to this book. It’s coming out in Nov, but like Kerry said above, it’s available on Amazon right now for preorder, which you can also access via the link on the sidebar of the homepage. I’m so proud of everything and I’d like to give a special shoutout to the stellar team we put together to bring you this baby. Truly, it was a labor of love, and I think you might love it just as much as we do.And like I said, it’s going to set your coffee table off so very nice 😉

TONY MOLY INTENSE CARE SNAIL EYE MASK JUMBO REVIEW

tonymolyintensecaresnaileyemaskjumbo
I’ve talked before about my love of snail secretion as a skincare ingredient. It’s almost old-hat at this point, but it will always be a favourite of mine. Most of my snail skincare has slowly been replaced by ferments lately but the one area I still indulge is the eyes. Snail secretion is so soothing and moisturizing without being greasy, it lends itself wonderfully to delicate eye skin. My favourite delivery method is the Tony Moly Intense Care Snail Eye Mask Jumbo. If, for whatever reason, you don’t like the idea of applying snail secretion to your face, you may prefer to shop collagen eye masks as an alternative for making your eyes more refreshed.

These little comma shaped gel eye patches are perfectly contoured for your eyes. They come in a pack of 30 (15 uses) which I like better than the single use eye masks. I love the gel that these are made out of, the way it mollifies is unparalleled in the eye mask world IMO. Also packed with Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide, Aloe Leaf Juice, Rose Extract, Diamond Powder, and even Colloidal Gold, the ultra soothing patches cool and nourish. When I’m having a particularly rough morning, I love slipping these on my eyes, one set under my eyes, and one set on my lids, for the ultimate in remedying puffy tired eyes. I really love how they’re oversized and cover such a big area! I don’t like to be wasteful so after I’m through using them on my eyes (time permitting) I flip them over to the other side and put them on my smile lines. Their shape fits the contours of that area perfectly. I’ve also been known to put them on my lips. They’re definitely a lot more multi-purpose than they’re marketed as.

I even found this video showing how you can apply these as you’re doing your morning makeup for both therapeutic use and to catch eyeshadow fall out! (skip to about 4:05 in for that part)

I love these things and they’re a staple in my routine!

WHAT THE BEAUTY BLOGGERS USE: FEATURING CHARLOTTE CHO OF SOKOGLAM

We write, we curate, we cull the herd, we try it all, we pare it down, we’re always searching for the standout stars. Do you ever wonders what the bloggers themselves are using? I’ve rounded up my favourite ladies in the game and asked them about their personal line-ups and thoughts on skincare!
CharlotteCho
Today I’m featuring Charlotte Cho, the brains (and absolute beauty!) behind Soko Glam. The write up on Soko Glam says it all:
Soko Glam is dedicated to discovering Korean cosmetics & beauty trends. With our thoughtfully curated selection from the most innovative and trusted brands, we invite you to explore Korea’s best in beauty.”

I’m a huge fan of Charlotte, she’s been featured in several well known publications and curates the Soko Glam online boutique. With her flawless skin and classic beauty, you can’t look at her without thinking “Giiiirl, what are you using? Because I want to look like that.”

I started by asking what she uses in her morning routine. She let us know that recently it consists of:

charlotteAM
Shingmulnara: Ultra Light Sun Gel SPF 30 PA++ (this was featured in the Get K-Beauty Box)
I then asked her to let us in on what she uses for her nighttime routine. She let me know that the evening is the time when she tests new products so it’s ever changing (I think this is the case with most of us beauty bloggers!) Currently she’s using:
charlottePM
Skinfood Lemon Brightening Cleansing Oil
Su:m37 Rose Cleansing Stick
Missha Super Aqua Hydrating Toner
Benton Aloe Propolis Soothing Gel
Banila Co Brightening It Radiant Cream
Su:m37 Water-full Cream

I also wanted to pick her brain and find out what her favourite beauty products are right now. Charlotte always looks so put together and cute, so I was especially interested in these answers!
charlotteproducts
Charlotte says:

IOPE water fit lipstick, because Jeonjihyun is my spirit animal (and it’s super moisturizing).
Clio Waterproof Pen Liner – I never liked liquid eyeliner until I used this one. It’s a game-changer!
Tony Moly Petite Bunny Lip gloss for cuteness and a sheer tint!
The secret to the glow-y dewy face without looking too shiny? A good sheer highlighter makes my face glow (in a matte) type of way?

I then wanted to know if she had any other beauty recommendations, any tools or anything that didn’t quite fall into the skincare of makeup category.
Charlotte says:

“I have a lot of annoying baby hairs so this bow hair pad is everything!”

(The Beauty Wolf says: I know that pain all too well, baby hair club unite. Those little things are super useful when you’re doing masks or your routine!)

The one thing I’m always curious about is how people get into the game. Whenever I get a chance, I love to find out more about these self starters who’ve gone onto success. It’s one thing to toy around with the idea, and a whole other to try to make it happen. So I asked, what was the catalyst that propelled her from just daydreaming about it to actually doing it?

Charlotte says:
My husband Dave and I loved living in Korea and we have always been very passionate about the people and the culture. It was the perfect opportunity to share with the rest of the world one of the things Korea does best – skincare and cosmetics! It really wasn’t easy leaving stable careers and taking this leap into entrepreneurship, but I’m so glad we did.
Finally, I asked her what she thought the future held for her, and what her thoughts were on what she’s doing now:

Charlotte says:
I want to keep doing what I am passionate about: testing and curating Korean beauty products and making the discovery process enjoyable for others!
In the past year, I started receiving emails from people who have experienced positive results after trying out my 10-step Korean skincare routine. Knowing I made an impact on someone’s confidence and skin has been incredibly rewarding which made me decide to go back to school to become a certified esthetician! I’m not sure what the future holds for me, but I’m truly grateful to be part of this journey and happy about where I am now.

So there you have it folks, a peek behind the curtain at one of the best out there. Thank you so much Charlotte for participating, it was a pleasure!

TONY MOLY MY LOVE CURE BALM REVIEW

TONYMOLYMYLOVECUREBALM
Confession: I totally bought this for the packaging. Horses? Yes ma’am, need it. Basing a purchase on a cute package could have gone really wrong for me, but thankfully it did not! Because of the packaging being my sole motivation, and there not being hardly any English information out there about this adorable little product, I was kind of flying blind when testing it out. All I could gather initially was that this is a multipurpose balm type cream containing avocado. With a little digging (and begging for some Korean to English translations) I found that this not only contained avocado oil which is an antioxidant, but also carrot extract, and portulaca extract. Portulaca extract is also an antioxidant in addition to being a source of vitamins A, C, and E, and co-enzyme Q-10. Pretty sweet jackpot of ingredients for a whimsical purchase.

tonymolymylovecurebalm2
The balm is about the constancy of a hard pomade at first, but it warms with your fingers and becomes more of cream with massage. You get 30 grams of product in the tin and it’s roughly the size of a travel aromatherapy candle, fitting because it has a lovely smell that I really like, clean and somewhat like a floralish perfume. I keep sniffing it whenever I open the tin like
smellllll

It says that this can be used anywhere, including the lips, but with the strong fragrance I found it to be a little too much for that area. Where this product really shines for me is as a cuticle and hand balm!
tonymolymylovecurebalm1

I absolutely love it rubbed into the hands and around the nails, especially overnight while wearing sleeping gloves. You wake up with super moisturized glowing hands. It’s helped a lot with my end of winter, dry, brittle cuticles. It’s also good on the feet used the same way overnight. Plus the smell is enjoyable so it’s a nice aromatherapy type scent to sleep with. This balm is limited edition, so hurry and pick yours up soon if you’re interested in one! I got mine at W2Beauty here and don’t forget  you can enter my sponsor code 071087605 at sign up to get five dollars off your first purchase!
I give this delightful little surprise of a balm 4 out of 5 turtles, I only wish it were a permanent item!

TONY MOLY RELAXING AQUA MARINE SHERBET CLEANSER REVIEW

TMRASCSherbet cleansers are going to be another one of those products I’m going to have to explain if you’re not already familiar with them.  In an Asian skincare routine, there is typically a two step process during nighttime cleansing that involves two different products. The first one is traditionally an oil cleanser to remove your makeup, followed up by your regular foaming cleanser. Sherbet cleansers are basically a solidified oil cleanser. Liquid oil cleansers work wonderfully, but some people eschew them for the sherbet style cleansers due to their ease of use. The liquid oil type has a pretty messy nature. It also has a tendency to get into the eyes, leaving you with an annoying temporary hazy film. The solid sherbet cleansers are a lot easier to handle and won’t dribble everywhere.

The most famous sherbet cleanser is probably the Banilla Co. Clean it Zero cleansing balm. The second is probably the Tony Moly Relaxing Aqua Marine Sherbet Cleanser, which is what I’ll be reviewing for you today.

TMAMSCCTony Moly Aqua Marine Sherbet Cleaner has a texture that’s something like that lemon ice cup dessert you can get from street vendors, if it were somehow able to be room temperature without melting. Kind of like butter straight out of the fridge before it gets soft. It’s a strange texture and hard to describe!

Once you scoop some out,  you can rub it with your fingertips and melt it down to a more oil like consistency. Next, you apply it to your face in a massaging motion as you would any makeup remover. It has a sort of vaguely citrusy smell that’s very subtle and refreshing. It glides all over with minimal effort, which is exactly what you want when dealing with the skin in the delicate eye area. It does a pretty decent job of removing your makeup. It completely rids your face of bb creams, foundation, base, blush, eyeshadows and even waterproof mascara. I used it here to remove the extremely tenacious Tony Moly Backstage Gel Eyeliner and the remnants of some MAC Fluidline and ELF gel liner. As you can see, it removed all but the very faintest ghost trace of the Tony Moly, which was easily removed with the foaming cleanser afterward.TMASCsw2Excuse my red skin, that has nothing to do with the cleanser, my skin is extremely reactive to the slightest friction, it goes back to normal in a minute or two lol.

Now, your face is most definitely not going to feel clean after using this product. Keep in mind that it’s a makeup remover and not a stand alone cleanser. You’ll be left with a kind of oily film on your face. Not to worry though, that’s where your foaming cleanser comes in and the two step process begins.
After you’ve used the sherbet to gently massage away your makeup, you wash your face with your favourite regular cleanser. It completely removes the oily feeling left by your sherbet or oil cleanser, leaving you with clean skin. I find that the Tony Moly Relaxing Aqua Sherbet Cleanser is removed a lot easier than some cleansing oils I’ve tried. All in all this is a pretty fool proof method for throughly removing makeup and experimenting with two step night cleansing. Using two cleansers might seem like overkill and take some getting used to, but together they do things that neither one could do alone.
Tony Moly Relaxing Aqua Sherbet Cleanser gets  4 out of 5 turtles.
