GET BACK ON TRACK WITH THESE K-BEAUTY SUPER PERFORMERS

Get Back On Track With Korean Beauty
So you’ve been slacking. Maybe you’ve been ill. Maybe you’ve been lazy. Maybe you’ve been down in the dumps, hell, maybe you’ve been trapped at the bottom of a dump, it doesn’t matter. None of that matters. What matters is you’re here now, and you’re ready to get back on top of shit like the boss that you are. But alas, any kind of skincare slacking is going to have a negative affect on your skin.  Think of it like being a peak athlete and then stopping your training, you’re going to start things out better than the general population, but you’re still going to have to put in some work to get back on top of your game. The good news is, with skincare and especially with K-beauty, there are some skincare equivalents to the Konami cheat code that can give you a huge boost in getting back to where you want your skin to be! And it’s easier than:
the-code

I’ve put together a list of my favs that can work some fast miracles in restoring your skin to it’s former glory.  Another selling point? These products also work great for beginners looking for instant results! So be sure to pass these along to the skeptical K-beauty newbs in your life that you want to convert over to the good side 😉

I’ll be showcasing goodies that help boost that moisture barrier you should be doing nothing short of babying at all times.  Seriously, at all times. All. Times. All the times, people! 😉

Dr G Brightening Peeling Gel
So, you’re dry, haggard, and flaky. Makeup is sticking to every little dry skin flake and your complexion is dull as Deborah in the HR department. A scrub would be too harsh, especially if you’ve not been being nice to your skin and moisture barrier. A perfect gentle alternative? A gommage. The perfect gommage? Dr. G. Brightening Peeling Gel.
I’m a fan of a good gommage. We used them a lot when I was in school learning to be an aesthetician. A lot of people like to poo-poo peeling gels because they wrongly think they’re being duped into believing that the little balls of gel are their dead skin cells coming off. It’s not true. The little balls are merely the product balling up, and when coupled with the light friction of your fingers making a circle motion, it’s picking up your dead skin along with it. From there a more glowing, smoother, skin emerges from underneath the trash heap you’ve cultivated on your face. (Hey, it’s harsh but it’s true, and I’ve been just as guilty of it at certain times in my life!). Dr G Brightening Peeling Gel works better than any other I’ve tried, this is a high-end quality product. Other peeling gels/gommages I’ve tried have too much slip in them, so they don’t ball up as nicely, and are therefore not as effective at removing your dull skin buildup. Dr G’s has just the right texture to get the results desired. And although chemical exfoliation is always best, sometimes you just really need the instant results of a manual, so I strongly recommend you always have some of this stuff on hand. I find it especially helpful for the aforementioned problem of having cakey makeup build-up when applying your foundation or bb cream. This eliminates that problem and leaves you with a smooth, bright, glowy canvas for your makeup. You may even be inspired to skip your bb cream after using this gel!

shark sauce holy snails
Holy Snails Shark Sauce
Have you heard the good word? Have you converted to the religion sweeping the K-beauty nation that is the indie Holy Snails brand? Woooooo, let me tell you, Shark Sauce is my new lord and skin saviour! I will stand up and testify to this until I drop dead. Following the tenants of K-beauty, listening to what the consumers have been begging for, and then delivering it to us straight from her divine hand, Chel of Holy Snails has turned a small DIY business into a cult classic. Guys, this is the hipster d-bag equivalent to hearing the next Beatles at their first underground show in someone’s shitty dive bar. Get in on the ground floor with this stuff! It is life changing. Here is my own personal Shark Sauce story. I was going through a time of immense stress,  my lupus was attacking my skin, and I had been so sick that I had all but stopped caring for my skin. I was experiencing the worst breakout of my adult life and my skin was sallow as a sick hog. The breakouts had lead to some post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation, which is something I never experience. I was at my skin rock-bottom.  Desperate to get back on track I reached out and touched faith in the form of Shark Sauce. No lie, you guys, within a single month, my skin was back to near normal. Acne gone. Marks gone. Complexion revitalized. Dryness gone. Within two months? My skin had never, ever been better. This magic potion delivered me from skin sin and exalted my ass straight to skin nirvana. If you’re my real life friend you’ve already heard me waxing poetic about this stuff, and now my dearest readers, I’m passing the knowledge on to you. I feel very similarly about Holy Snail’s other products as well, so far I haven’t found a thing I don’t absolutely love (particularly loving Snowbang and Persieds oil as well). Trust me, I get no money from this endorsement this is just pure unadulterated praise, joy, and truth coming from me. Heaven is a little plastic bottle. papa recipe bombee honey mask
Papa Recipe Bombee Honey Mask
There’s nothing like a sheet mask to kick things into high skin gear. All the benefits of a facial delivered directly into your skin in the comfort of your own home (or in a plane, on a train, in a box, with a fox, ect. ect.). What I love about the Papa Recipe Bombee Honey Mask is found right in it’s name, the honey. It even smells like pure honey goodness. Nourishing, antiseptic, ancient food of the Gods, honey. Honey is the fourth ingredient in this mask and you will smell that fact that minute you rip into the package. The sweet, sweet, honey aroma pleasantly lingers during the entire duration of your sheet masking session. I don’t know how you can come away from that in a bad mood and or not feeling like a God/Goddess. And the mask itself? Absolutely SATURATED with essence. This is one of the most soaked in serum sheet masks I have ever tried. Imagine if the word “waterboarding” was actually a really pleasant awesome thing, then this is how you’d describe this mask. You are definitely getting your money’s worth of product in this baby. There’s so much extra essence that you can apply it to the neck, chest, and even the shoulders (shit, if you’re really thin probably your legs too). This is just brimming with goodness. Your skin will be plumper, glowy, hydrated, and lost in honey dream come true. I am always sure to have one of these masks on hand for rainy days, both metaphorically and literal. There’s no nicer way to spend 20 minutes and thankfully for skin that is in need of extra help, there’s no kinder way to spend it either.

goodal mild protect suncream spf50
Goodal Mild Protect Natural Filter Sun Cream SPF50+ PA+++
To finish it all up, you need a good sunblock. And if you’ve fucked up your moisture barrier you need a high performing, but mild one. Goodal Sun Cream is my favourite pick to fit this bill. This is a full spectrum, full physical sunblock, so if you’re sensitive to chemicals (I know I sometimes am particularly sensitive to chemical sunblocks around my eye area) this is an excellent choice. It smells like a flower garden, so if you’re into florals and hate that typical sunblock scent, once again, we have a winner. My favourite part about this sunblock is that it contains no alcohol. Alcohol itself is not that big of a deal in skincare products, but if you’re already dry and irritated, it can become a problem and make you instantly flaky and leave your skin very angry. And of course some people just can’t tolerate it under any circumstance, so if you’re on the hunt for sun protection sans alcool, your search is over. This sunblock manages to give extremely thorough high SPF protection, without the funky smell, no irritation, and with an essentially undetectable white cast. You can’t ask for much more in your sun protection, this is an excellent product and will protect you with all of the dedicated fervor of a bodyguard that’s fallen in love with you.

KOREAN BEAUTY SECRETS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO CUTTING-EDGE SKINCARE AND MAKEUP

KBSTBW
It’s officially official, we wrote a book! Like an actual one, that you can hold, and buy, and that would look so incredibly cute on your coffee table.

I’m going to take the words from my co-author and soul sister Kerry (Skin & Tonics), and let her give you her take on it before I put in my two cents 😀

We set out to create a book that would be useful, interesting, and fun for complete newcomers to K-beauty as well as the more experienced, and I wholeheartedly believe we accomplished that task. It has everything you need to know to assemble a Korean style skincare routine, including :
• Detailed information on each skincare product categories
• How to assess and address your skincare needs
• Tips for determining layering order
• Shopping and ingredient cheat sheets organized by skin concern
• Ingredient definitions
• Detailed example skincare routines by several of our favorite bloggers
• Nearly 250 English-Korean ingredient translationsIt also features:• An amazingly thorough makeup section that provides detailed descriptions of all the different makeup categories
• Guides to achieving some truly beautiful Korean-inspired makeup looks.
• A lot of gorgeous photography

One area where Coco and I were particularly fortunate is that we were given full control over the book’s content and design. Being given design control is not typical in the traditional publishing industry, so this was a really big deal for us! Coco art directed the photoshoots, and I handled the layout and information design. We both developed the cover design. The finished product is a beautiful, glossy, full-color, hardcover. If you don’t want to wait for November to order it, you canpre-order it on Amazon and receive it the day it’s released (November 3, 2015).

I’m so excited to introduce you guys to this book. It’s coming out in Nov, but like Kerry said above, it’s available on Amazon right now for preorder, which you can also access via the link on the sidebar of the homepage. I’m so proud of everything and I’d like to give a special shoutout to the stellar team we put together to bring you this baby. Truly, it was a labor of love, and I think you might love it just as much as we do.And like I said, it’s going to set your coffee table off so very nice 😉

SHISEIDO HADA SENKA MINERAL UV GEL SPF50 PA+++ REVIEW

shisedosenkamineraluvgelAhh, the never-ending quest for good sunscreen. I really wish the world at large would have figured out just how horrible the sun’s rays are sooner, so we wouldn’t be scrambling like we are now (many of us having gone through skin cancer, premature aging, and childhoods peppered with sunburns). I think I’ve talked about it before, but it was the removal of skin cancer from the tops of my ears that really made me sit up and get serious about the sun. I grew up in the south in a time where people coated themselves in butter to get as dark as possible and sunblock was only for the palest of non-tanning white kids. Nowadays you’ll find me in long sleeves in the dead of summer cursing the beaming rays and testing out a non-stop revolving door of sun products. That very activity is what lead me to today’s product, Shisedo’s Hada Senka Mineral UV Gel SPF50 PA+++

If we take a look at the ingredients on the Cosdna site we see a couple of things here, the most important being that this protects from both UVB and UVA rays. UVB rays are the one that will burn you up like a steamed hotdog, UVA rays are what make you look like an old leather crypt keeper. It’s very important that whatever product you ultimately choose, that you make sure you’re protected from both kinds of UV rays. If you’re curious about the “PA” you typically see on Japanese and Korean sunscreen offerings, wikipedia solved that mystery for me:
PA system
Asian brands, particularly Japanese ones, tend to use The Protection Grade of UVA (PA) system to measure the UVA protection a sunscreen provides.

The Protection Grade of UVA (PA) system is based on the PPD reaction and is now widely adopted on the labels of sunscreens. According to the Japan Cosmetic Industry Association PA+ corresponds to a UVA protection factor between two and four, PA++ between four and eight, and PA+++ more than eight.

After finding that out I’m always on the look out for that sweet, sweet “+++”.

Now, let’s get down to business. This bottle is a lot smaller than North American sunblocks if that’s what you’re used to. As you can see in the picture above, the whole thing almost fits in my hand, and I have tiny itty bitty hands. Before use, be sure to shake the bottle vigorously to mix everything together. You’ll hear a little mixing ball inside helping things along. Once you squeeze out the desired amount you will see how liquid-y this is, which is a texture I love for my sunblocks. The consistency is extremely light. When you first apply this to your skin there is a slick feeling and a sheen, but it quickly dissipates and dries nearly matte (I guess this is thanks to the inclusion of alcohol in the ingredients). This makes it easy to layer your product to get the best coverage. It’s suggested you use 1/4 tsp to get the maximum benefits from sunblock. That’s quite hard to do with heavier formulations. This is extremely easy and user-friendly. That is probably the greatest selling point for this particular product. Another thing that I really liked was that it did not cause me any breakouts.

Now, back to that alcohol. I normally don’t worry much about alcohol in products personally. But for some reason, this time around, the alcohol really did a number on me. However, I wouldn’t take my experience as typical, I have some factors that are pretty rare. I have a disease called lupus (let me take this time to say, seriously, f*ck lupus) and it’s been bothersome lately. During the first half of the month I starting testing this, everything was just perfect. But recently I’ve been dealing with some lupus related flare-ups and for me that usually manifests on my skin, mostly on the soft tissues. The alcohol in this coupled with the lupus crap made for a horrible reaction around my eyelids and mouth. I had huge red puffy flaky skin around those two areas. I’m steal dealing with the fallout from it now, which is why I haven’t been able to take photos and do reviews lately, I apologize for that! But like I said, that is a rare circumstance and I don’t think for a minute this product would do this for a regular user. It’s a really good sunblock, especially for oiler skins and the for the summertime. The almost matte finish it leaves you with makes for a good base to put your bb cream or foundation on top of without any interference. The high SPF and PA+++ rating is also another plus. I’m not exactly sure how to rate this product, do I base it on my personal experience or how I think it would fare for someone else? I’m just going to have to go with a middle of the road 3 out of 5 turtles. Drier skins and skins going through any sort of irritation or trouble should probably avoid this particular product and opt for something more moisturizing, but I encourage oiler skinned people looking for something light and layer friendly to check it out.

MISSHA ALL AROUND SAFE BLOCK WATERPROOF SUN MILK REVIEW

misshaallaroundsafesunmilk

I’ve mentioned before that I absolutely hate the feel of most sunblocks. Since they’re such an important part of our daily skincare, it’s usually a very uncomfortable exercise in necessity for me. If you’re in same boat with regards to being extremely picky in the feel of your sunblocks you’re going to love this stuff. Hell, even if you’re not, you still might love it. It’s pretty damn awesome.

Missha All Around Safe Block Waterproof Sun Milk SPF 50 PA+++ just might be my favourite sun protection around right now. It comes in a bottle with a little bead inside to help stir the contents (much like a nail polish bottle). Make sure you remember to shake it thoroughly before use, otherwise you’re going to get a weird oily looking separation of the product. I found that out the hard way one groggy morning when I forgot to shake the bottle and ended up looking like someone coated my face in vinaigrette.

MisshaAllAroundSafeBlockWaterproofSunMilkswatch

As the name would suggest, once shaken up it has the consistency of of milk. What makes me absolutely love this product is that it blends away into the feeling of absolute nothing. It’s weightless, almost more like a serum than a moisturizer which most sunblocks tend to present as. There is also no white cast left on your face, another thing typical of most sunblocks that thing stuff manages to avoid. When you plug the ingredients into the COSDNA site we see that this has zinc oxide which offers full UVA and UVB protection. I guess the tradeoff for the weightlessness is that this has a high alcohol content, which can be an irritant to some people. For me personally I have no problems with alcohols and irritation, but of course your mileage may vary. The scent is the normal sunblock smell but a very mild incarnation, it’s not really noticeable. Now, as far as the waterproof claims, I really have no way of telling accurately. I do have a pool in my building but I don’t use it, nor do I do any heavy outdoor activities as it’s currently the dead of winter. So I’m going to have to rate this solely on it’s high 50 SPF, full UVA/UVB protection, and it’s magic lightness. This particular version of the waterproof sun milk is not currently available on Missha’s US or Canadian website. (edit: It’s available now! http://www.misshaus.com/all-around-safe-block-waterproof-sun-milk-spf50-pa.html ) That leads me to believe this is an Asian exclusive. It’s available at various online Korean shops in the 40ml and 70ml size that I’ve shown in my graphic at the beginning of the post. You can get the 70 ml size on Amazon here:  http://www.amazon.com/MISSHA-All-around-Block-Waterproof-SPF50/dp/B00EBZCI9Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1430698845&sr=8-1&keywords=Missha+All+Around+Safe+Block+Waterproof+Sun+Milk+SPF+50+PA

and ebay here in 70ml:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/MISSHA-All-Around-Safe-Block-Waterproof-Sun-Milk-70ml-SPF50-PA-/380984806549?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item58b476cc95

and 40 ml size:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/MISSHA-All-Around-Safe-Block-Waterproof-Sun-Milk-40ml-SPF50-PA-/380984806539?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item58b476cc8b
Because of the high alcohol content I can’t rate this a 5 for everyone (it’s a 5 for me though!) but this is a soild 4 sunning turtles.
