KOREAN BEAUTY SECRETS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO CUTTING-EDGE SKINCARE AND MAKEUP

KBSTBW
It’s officially official, we wrote a book! Like an actual one, that you can hold, and buy, and that would look so incredibly cute on your coffee table.

I’m going to take the words from my co-author and soul sister Kerry (Skin & Tonics), and let her give you her take on it before I put in my two cents 😀

We set out to create a book that would be useful, interesting, and fun for complete newcomers to K-beauty as well as the more experienced, and I wholeheartedly believe we accomplished that task. It has everything you need to know to assemble a Korean style skincare routine, including :
• Detailed information on each skincare product categories
• How to assess and address your skincare needs
• Tips for determining layering order
• Shopping and ingredient cheat sheets organized by skin concern
• Ingredient definitions
• Detailed example skincare routines by several of our favorite bloggers
• Nearly 250 English-Korean ingredient translationsIt also features:• An amazingly thorough makeup section that provides detailed descriptions of all the different makeup categories
• Guides to achieving some truly beautiful Korean-inspired makeup looks.
• A lot of gorgeous photography

One area where Coco and I were particularly fortunate is that we were given full control over the book’s content and design. Being given design control is not typical in the traditional publishing industry, so this was a really big deal for us! Coco art directed the photoshoots, and I handled the layout and information design. We both developed the cover design. The finished product is a beautiful, glossy, full-color, hardcover. If you don’t want to wait for November to order it, you canpre-order it on Amazon and receive it the day it’s released (November 3, 2015).

I’m so excited to introduce you guys to this book. It’s coming out in Nov, but like Kerry said above, it’s available on Amazon right now for preorder, which you can also access via the link on the sidebar of the homepage. I’m so proud of everything and I’d like to give a special shoutout to the stellar team we put together to bring you this baby. Truly, it was a labor of love, and I think you might love it just as much as we do.And like I said, it’s going to set your coffee table off so very nice 😉

HOLIKA HOLIKA PIG COLLAGEN JELLY PACK REVIEW

holikaholikapigcollagen1
This review is not for vegetarians, and most certainly not my vegan readers out there. As you can guess from the name, Holika Holika Pig Collagen Jelly Pack is full of collagen extracted from a pig’s skin. If that doesn’t put you off, and you’re looking for a great moisturizing sleeping pack, keep reading!

Collagen is one of those ingredients you hear a lot in the skincare world. Collagen is something that’s found naturally in all of our skin. It’s what gives that bounce and firmness. As you age your skin loses the firmness of the collagen, which is why it’s such a popular injectable. While no cream on earth can give you the same kind of results injections can, collagen applied topically can help hold in moisture, which can give a temporary plumping effect and help relieve fine lines caused by dryness. This is exactly what Holika Holika Pig Collagen Jelly Pack does.

There doesn’t seem to be anywhere else online with the English ingredients listed for this product so I took the opportunity to type them out for you:

hydrolyzed collagen extract, cyclopentasiloxane, cyclohexasiloxane, butylene glycol, glycerin, bis-peg-18, methyl ether dimethyl silane, polysorbate 20, water, peg-240/hdi copolymer bis-decyltertadeceth-20 ether, caprylyl glycol, ethylhexyglycerine, tropolone, zea mays (corn) starch, microcrystalline cellulose, sucrose, mannitol, mica, titanium dioxide, tocopheryl acetate, ci 77491, tin oxide, acrylates/c10-30 akyl acrylate crosspolymer, potassium hydroxide, adnesone, trehalose, beta-glucan, sodium hyaluronate, placental protein, phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin, dipropylene gylcol, portulaca olercea extract, rubus idaeus (raspberry) fruit extract, opunita ficus-indica stem extract, avena sativa (oat) meal extract, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, rosmarinus offininalis (rosemary) extract, lavandula angustifolia (lavender) extract, thymus vulgaris (thyme) extract, bergenia ciliata root extract, viola mandshurica flower extract, impatiens balsamina flower extract, honey extract, euterpe oleracea fruit extract, biosaccharide gum-1, arnica montana flower extract, gentiana lutea root extract, achillea millefolium extract, artemisia absinthium extract, gold, disodium edta, ci 17200, fragrance

You’ll notice the main ingredient is collagen, always a good sign when the namesake of the product is actually listed first in the ingredients. If you plug the list into the Cosdna website you’ll see that this is chock full of moisturizers and scores only a 1 on the scale for potential acne triggers. There’s also some notable anti-inflammatory ingredients and emollients. Basically this is an amazing, light, non-irritating, soothing, moisture bomb. There are other products on the market such as EGF, people often ask, what is EGF? EGF is a great anti-ageing product that works similarly to Pig-Collagen.

If you’re not familiar with sleeping packs, the quick rundown is it’s just an extra bonus treatment that works as you sleep. You follow your existing skincare routine, apply this product as your last step at night, go to bed as normal, and that’s it!

The texture is what I describe as creamy jell-o. It wiggles and jiggles but it also has a fluffy richness that’s not typical of a gelatine. If you’re worried about the potential smell, don’t be, this has a light baby floral scent. I say baby floral because it registers somewhere between floral and baby powder for me. The pack comes in a twist off jar packaging and includes a little spatula so you don’t have to potentially contaminate the jelly with your fingers. I always appreciate the included spatulas, plus when you’re done with the product you can always keep it for your jar creams. The colour is a light piggy pink colour and flecked throughout with little bits of actual gold.
holikaholikapigcLLgenswatch

As you can see from the picture this is a very light gel product, not a cream. It may feel a little occlusive for the first few minutes you apply it, but within 10 minutes it sinks into the skin leaving behind minimal stickiness for a product like this. I apply this about 15 minutes before bed and have never had any issue with pillow transfer or mess. Upon waking in the morning my skin definitely feels plumper and more moisturized than if I hadn’t worn the pack overnight. It’s never once broken me out and it’s always performed wonderfully. This product is light enough that even oily skin could use it in the winter should they feel they need a little moisture boost in certain areas overnight. In summer this is a great treatment to leave in the fridge for a refreshing cooling effect. Holika Holika Pig Collagen Jelly Pack reminds me somewhat of Clinique’s Moisture Surge in colour and even texture, but it works way better for me. It’s what I wish Moisture Surge actually was.

HOLIKA HOLIKA FACE 2 CHANGE LIQUID ROLLER BB REIVEW

holikaface2changeliquidrollerbb
Continuing with the unique Holika Holika BBs, we have something today that’s way, way out of the box in terms of a delivery system. The Holika Holika Face 2 Change Liquid Roller BB is a BB cream in probably the most unusual packaging I’ve ever seen. It’s housed in a hard plastic tube with a sponge roller at the end. You press the button on the side to dispense the product onto the sponge, then you roll it across your face like a paint roller to apply.

Now, if I can be honest with you for a second. I may or may not have initially bought this product because of how much it’s design reminded me of a stun gun.

face2changeliquidrollerbbwut

See? I mean, really. It’s like a stun gun of bb cream for your face. How has no one else seen the similarities yet? ;)Getting down to the nitty gritty of this product, although it is very unique, it’s also a bit unwieldily and awkward to handle. I ended up having to blend it with my fingers in some tight spots. This is from the Face 2 Change line like the Moist Cushion BB I reviewed earlier, but the finish is totally different. This is more of a matte and doesn’t give that beautiful glow that the cushion bb gave me. This also tends to cling more to dry patches. I think this would perform well for an oily skin type, especially those who appreciate a matte finish and oil control.  This is available in two shades, #1 and #2. I got shade #2 which is slightly too dark for my skin but would do well for Summer time. I think this is a medium type coverage but I didn’t want to try to build on it as it was already clinging to my dry areas. Also I should mention to those worried about hygiene, the roller sponge is removable and can be cleaned.
HOLIKAHOLIKAFACE2CHANGELIQUIDROLLERBBSWATCH

I have to be honest. I don’t love this product. I mean, it’s not a bad product. It just doesn’t work for me. I’m usually all for weird things but this one isn’t all that user friendly for me personally. The formulation isn’t necessarily bad either, I just think I’m a glow junkie and between the two I really prefer both the delivery system, and the glowing finish of the Moist Cushion BB. Still, this is a nice matte bb cream if that’s your thing. I also think the fact that I’m a drier skin type and this is obviously geared toward oily skin is a factor in my not loving it. This could very well be someone else’s HG BB, but for me I’m going to go with three out of five turtles.

HOLIKA HOLIKA FACE 2 CHANGE MOIST CUSHION BB REVIEW

Face2ChangeMoistCushionBB

Ahhhh. Breaking into a fresh bb cream. Is there anything more satisfying? I feel like an alcoholic poppin’ the top on my first beer of the day, but without all of the self loathing and liver toxicity.

Holika Holika Face2Change Moist BB Cushion is part of a huge trend in Korea right now, cushion bb pacts. The cushion compact concept is pretty straight forward, but none the less magical. (Can you tell I’m a big fan?). What you get is a standard compact, a silicone sponge (like the one in the Etude House Nymph Aura Volumer Baby Glow Balm), and a divider protecting the product. Once opened you remove the protective sticker, then you see this neat little porous “sponge” type pad. I think pad is a better descriptor than sponge, think more along the lines of an ink pad and less like a dish scrubber. Next you simply press the provided silicone applicator into the ink pad and it dispenses the bb cream onto it. Then you lightly stamp it all over your face to apply. I find stamping is a better delivery than dragging with these things.

face2changemoistcushionbbpic

See? Cooooool. I got shade #21 Light Beige, which is the lightest of their two shade offerings. It has a pink undertone which would normally not work for me but as is the case with most bb creams, this oxidized and blended perfectly into my skin colour. The finish is glowy and gorgeous. The coverage is a buildable light to medium. The wear time for me was all day, although as I’ve mentioned in past reviews, I’ve never had a problem with makeup melting off my face as some do, so YMMV.face2changemoistcushionbbswatch

It’s so convenient and handy. Love these things. As always I greatly appreciate the super high SPF 50 PA+++ this provides. Of course it’s no substitute for your regular sunblock but it’s nice to know it’s there. Just about every major Korean brand has their version of a bb cushion. They range the gambit from the ultra high end to the ultra cheap. Holika Holika is one of the cheapest ones but it’s quality is still excellent. Holika Holika Face 2 Change Moist BB Cushion gets a very respectable 4.5 out of 5 turtlesUPDATE: It’s now called Holika Holika Face 2 Change Photo Ready Cushion

HOLIKA HOLIKA AQUA PETIT JELLY WATERY CHEEK REVIEW

BWolfreviewAPJWC

Holika Holika Aqua Petit Jelly Watery Cheek is quite a mouthful, but let’s see if it’s worthy of a cheekful.

Holika Holika is a brand from South Korea marketed toward the younger set. The name Holika Holika is supposed to be a magic word you say to get your wish, something akin to abracadabra, and the wish is for you to be beautiful. Yeah. I know. But, the Aqua Petite Jelly Watery Cheek is a cute little tube of liquid blush. I would say this is a thin cream rather than a straight up liquid blush like the name Watery would suggest. It’s nothing like say, Benefit’s Benetint. This has a consistency close to that of a bb cream, but in blush form. It goes on very smoothly and blends really nicely without much effort. This is perfect for a quick application when you want some colour on your face before you head out the door. Since it is in a little tube it’s also great to take along with you! You don’t need to worry about a powder blush shattering in your purse or having to carry a bulky brush that takes up valuable bag real estate. You can apply this with a sponge or even just your fingers. The sponge of course has a more refined application but blending with your fingers will do just fine and give you a nice flush of colour. The colours I have tried are 02 Peach Pink and 03 Watery Pink.
SWATCHESJLKDSL
Peach Pink is more of a coral I’d say. At least that’s how it shows up on my NC15 skin tone. On me it definitely leans more toward the orange but I’ve seen a video review of the same shade and on that particular girl it read more pink (and looked lovely too). I don’t out and out dislike the 02 Peach Pink but I find myself neglecting it in favour of other things. That’s not to say it’s not a nice shade, it’s just not right for me. A medium skin tone would like this I think. The real standout for me is the 03 Watery Pink. It’s a light baby pink cotton candy shade that looks like a really sweet dolly flush on my skin. It may translate as ashy pepto bismol on a dark skin shade as most super light shades do, but for the pale folks out there this little treasure is for you. In addition to the colour what I like about this product is the texture and how it feels once it’s applied. I’ve used some cream blushers that have had a more silicone like slip and I really disliked them. This goes on more like your moisturizer would, speaking of which this actually does feel moisturizing on. A drier skin or a skin currently experiencing winter would especially appreciate this product. It’s definitely not oily feeling but it’s creamy texture feels like it’s adding a little something. I wish I had the ingredients list to see what exactly is in it but unfortunately there’s nothing listed on the tube.
You don’t need very much product to get the full effect. I use a small squeeze for both cheeks. The only downside there is for me is that the staying power isn’t that great. You would definitely need to touch up throughout the day, but since it’s portable that’s not a deal breaker for me. I can slap some on whenever I’m touching up my lipstick. It would make a good staple to keep one dedicated to your purse’s makeup bag.
Holika Holika offers 5 shades of Aqua Petit Jelly Watery Cheek ranging from a true lipstick red to a white beam highlighter. They also suggest that you can use the white highlighter shade both on it’s own, and mixed with other shades to adjust the colours. It might be fun to get creative with it if you’re inclined to do so.
I would rate the shade 03 Watery Pink 4 turtles for the fair skinned beauties out there but overall this offering gets a 3.5 out of 5 turtles. I’m only deducting points for lackluster staying power and it’s smallish shade selection. That being said I will most likely repurchase this product. Because of it’s portability and ease of use I do find myself reaching for it frequently.
