KOREAN BEAUTY SECRETS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO CUTTING-EDGE SKINCARE AND MAKEUP

KBSTBW
It’s officially official, we wrote a book! Like an actual one, that you can hold, and buy, and that would look so incredibly cute on your coffee table.

I’m going to take the words from my co-author and soul sister Kerry (Skin & Tonics), and let her give you her take on it before I put in my two cents 😀

We set out to create a book that would be useful, interesting, and fun for complete newcomers to K-beauty as well as the more experienced, and I wholeheartedly believe we accomplished that task. It has everything you need to know to assemble a Korean style skincare routine, including :
• Detailed information on each skincare product categories
• How to assess and address your skincare needs
• Tips for determining layering order
• Shopping and ingredient cheat sheets organized by skin concern
• Ingredient definitions
• Detailed example skincare routines by several of our favorite bloggers
• Nearly 250 English-Korean ingredient translationsIt also features:• An amazingly thorough makeup section that provides detailed descriptions of all the different makeup categories
• Guides to achieving some truly beautiful Korean-inspired makeup looks.
• A lot of gorgeous photography

One area where Coco and I were particularly fortunate is that we were given full control over the book’s content and design. Being given design control is not typical in the traditional publishing industry, so this was a really big deal for us! Coco art directed the photoshoots, and I handled the layout and information design. We both developed the cover design. The finished product is a beautiful, glossy, full-color, hardcover. If you don’t want to wait for November to order it, you canpre-order it on Amazon and receive it the day it’s released (November 3, 2015).

I’m so excited to introduce you guys to this book. It’s coming out in Nov, but like Kerry said above, it’s available on Amazon right now for preorder, which you can also access via the link on the sidebar of the homepage. I’m so proud of everything and I’d like to give a special shoutout to the stellar team we put together to bring you this baby. Truly, it was a labor of love, and I think you might love it just as much as we do.And like I said, it’s going to set your coffee table off so very nice 😉

BAD SKIN MILK BOMB ULTRA CREAM REVIEW

BadSkinMilkBombUltraCream

Bad Skin Milk Bomb, what a name.
This is one of those products I got last winter that got put away for the warmer weather. It’s starting to get chilly again, and with the heater in my building kicking in, dry skin is a-comin’. It’s time to turn an eye back to this super oddly named, super emollient cream.

First thing’s first. This cream does not give you bad skin, it’s supposed to address it. It is however a milk bomb. As is sometimes the case with some of the lesser known Korean products, there’s not a whole lot of English language information about this one. What I can give you is the scant, poorly written, somewhat hard to read translations I could find:

Whitening functional authentication, anti-wrinkle functional authentication

  1. Abundant moisturizing membrane – efficacy of milk as it is, using milk protein as the main base instead of purified water
  2. Containing overflowing nutrient ingredients – plenty of nutrients good for the skin, such as honey, yogurt, almond oil, macadamia nut oil, etc.,
  3. Bouncy elasticity – bouncy and elastic moist skin moist
  4. Smooth skin texture – Exfoliation and skin texture
  5. Milky whitening – niacin polyimide (B3) components contained in milk to be highly enriched once more! Clean skin without blemishes!

Water storage capacity enabled threefold moisturizing membrane

1st milk moisturizing membrane

extract of milk, protein, honey, yogurt, etc. forms this powerful primary moisturizing membrane

2nd trophic membrane

almond oil, argan oil, macadamia nut oil form secondary oil trophic membrane

3rd moisturizing membrane

contains low molecular weight hyaluronic acid + low molecular weight Aru acid at the same time. It provides moisture dermis and endodermis of the skin at the same time as a powerful moisturizer.

Milk Protein Extract

114 nutrients are contained in milk, which is a complete food with excellent effect on health and beauty. Glycoprotein in milk helps generate collagen to give a firmer skin and relieve wrinkles. In addition, it makes the skin clean, flexible and moist due to the synergy effect of natural ingredients including milk containing- lactic acid, niacinamide, ceramides, minerals, vitamins A, C, E, etc. beneficial to the skin.

Specifically, milk contained in Bad Skin Mink Bomb is made “‹”‹from the clean ranch of Jeju only.”

So basically what we have here is a milk based cream featuring honey, yoghurt, nut oils, and argan oils. Pretty much as moisturizing and rich as it gets. If your skin is dry, this cream is your friend. It’s lighter in texture than you would imagine given the ingredients, but it’s still moisturizing as hell. It’s a whipped milky yoghurt consistency that sinks in very nicely but not completely. It has no smell whatsoever, so if you’re sensitive to fragrances, you’ll dig that aspect. It comes in a basic screw top container but they provide a little spatula scoop to keep our grubby fingers from contaminating the product. Always a plus for that type of packaging. Also, I think the packaging might be recyclable so they must have got their wholesale packaging from a company like Impacked in order to make their product more sustainable.

I would say dry skins would really be into this stuff, especially if you prefer a thick barrier type cream, but even if your face skin is combination you could use this just around the eyes and mouth for extra protection from harsh winter winds. You can kind of get an idea of what I mean by thick barrier cream by seeing the pictures below. As you can see it does do a good job of hydrating my hands. I sometimes make a homemade mask pack for my hands with this stuff, I slather on a thick later of cream and wrap my hands in saran wrap for 20 minutes while jammin’ to Wu-Tang Clan’s C.R.E.A.M on repeat, Ok, that last part is optional. (LBR it shouldn’t be, Wu-Tang forever!)

This is a neat little cream with cute packaging, it’s not remarkable but it’s not bad!

TONY MOLY MY LOVE CURE BALM REVIEW

TONYMOLYMYLOVECUREBALM
Confession: I totally bought this for the packaging. Horses? Yes ma’am, need it. Basing a purchase on a cute package could have gone really wrong for me, but thankfully it did not! Because of the packaging being my sole motivation, and there not being hardly any English information out there about this adorable little product, I was kind of flying blind when testing it out. All I could gather initially was that this is a multipurpose balm type cream containing avocado. With a little digging (and begging for some Korean to English translations) I found that this not only contained avocado oil which is an antioxidant, but also carrot extract, and portulaca extract. Portulaca extract is also an antioxidant in addition to being a source of vitamins A, C, and E, and co-enzyme Q-10. Pretty sweet jackpot of ingredients for a whimsical purchase.

The balm is about the constancy of a hard pomade at first, but it warms with your fingers and becomes more of cream with massage. You get 30 grams of product in the tin and it’s roughly the size of a travel aromatherapy candle, fitting because it has a lovely smell that I really like, clean and somewhat like a floralish perfume. I keep sniffing it whenever I open the tin like
smellllll

It says that this can be used anywhere, including the lips, but with the strong fragrance I found it to be a little too much for that area. Where this product really shines for me is as a cuticle and hand balm!

I absolutely love it rubbed into the hands and around the nails, especially overnight while wearing sleeping gloves. You wake up with super moisturized glowing hands. It’s helped a lot with my end of winter, dry, brittle cuticles. It’s also good on the feet used the same way overnight. Plus the smell is enjoyable so it’s a nice aromatherapy type scent to sleep with. This balm is limited edition, so hurry and pick yours up soon if you’re interested in one! I got mine at W2Beauty here and don’t forget  you can enter my sponsor code 071087605 at sign up to get five dollars off your first purchase!
I give this delightful little surprise of a balm 4 out of 5 turtles, I only wish it were a permanent item!

SECRET KEY MILK WHIPPING HAND CREAM REVIEW

secretkeywhipping copyWhen I saw the main ingredient in this hand cream, I knew there was no way I could stop myself from giving it a try. Listen, my face is already slathered in bee venom, snail secretions, and fermented soybeans. If you think something is going to stop me from putting donkey milk all over my hands, you’d have to wait until they’re cold and dead to pry it away from them.

Secret Key Milk Whipping Hand Cream looks like an everyday unassuming hand cream on it’s surface but it’s not until you look closely at the top of the tube and see “donkey milk” in small white letters that you realize ‘holy shit, yessss sir, I need this”.

What’s the big deal about donkey milk you ask? Well, donkey milk is a very rare and hard to come by ingredient. It’s only available for six months out of the year and even then, you can only collect less than 1 liter a day from each mama donkey. It’s also the milk that is the closest in composition to human milk, their PHs are nearly identical. Human milk has a PH of 7.0 – 7.5, donkey milk sits at 7.0 – 7.2! Donkey milk is also full of both omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. It’s also very rich in lactose so it’s extremely hydrating and nourishing to skin. It’s been used since the dawn of civilization in Egypt, Rome, and Greece so this is nothing new. Hell, Cleopatra herself used to take donkey/ass milk baths to preserve her beauty. I guess her motto must have been live by the Ass, die by the Asp. (Lordt, I really think someone should take this blog away from me sometimes).

In addition to the milk, this cream also contains collagen and hyaluronic acid to create a barrier and prevent moisture loss. All in all, some pretty serious awesomeness in this humble little tube. The texture is very light for a hand cream, after all that ingredient hype I was expecting a L’Occitane level grease-fest honestly. I was skeptical about it’s abilities until I rubbed it in. As soon as I did it really wowed me! It absorbs so ridiculously easily compared to the heavy handed moisturizers I had been using. And even though it’s texture is airy it’s results are so much better than it’s thick counterparts. In the spirit of giving you a good review I wanted to really put this stuff to the test in extreme conditions. As I’ve written about before, the air in my apartment is drier than dry. It’s also currently frigid outside. So I didn’t moisturize my hands for a few days and then upon waking up today I went outside and walked the dog sans gloves while the temps were in the negative numbers. My hands were a nasty dehydrated, battered, irritated, desiccated mess and looked like they belonged to a Granny.
SecretKeyBAAs you can see this stuff made a pretty dramatic dent in all the manufactured damage I caused. So you can imagine if you use it daily the kind of results you’re going to get. It soothed the redness and irritation and plumped up my skin with hydration. Also of note, the cream absorbs so wonderfully and thoroughly that I was able to snap those iPhone pictures without leaving so much as the faintest  grease spot on the screen after I was done. I absolutely cannot stand the feeling of lotion on my hands normally. But honestly this stuff just melts away into nothingness and leaves your hands feeling clean yet moisturized. I almost forgot to mention it’s scent, I know that’s an important factor for a lot of people. It’s got an almost baby powder kind of smell, but somewhat cleaner and less cloying. I’m not usually a baby powder fan but this I can tolerate. It’s not overwhelming and it just kind of fades into the background after a minute. As sensitive as I am to smells I don’t like, I have to honestly say that this cream works so well I would probably put up with it even if it were funky. It’s just that good in my opinion.I’m going to give Secret Key Whipping Milk hand cream a solid four out of five turtles.
