HOLIKA HOLIKA PIG COLLAGEN JELLY PACK REVIEW

holikaholikapigcollagen1
This review is not for vegetarians, and most certainly not my vegan readers out there. As you can guess from the name, Holika Holika Pig Collagen Jelly Pack is full of collagen extracted from a pig’s skin. If that doesn’t put you off, and you’re looking for a great moisturizing sleeping pack, keep reading!

Collagen is one of those ingredients you hear a lot in the skincare world. Collagen is something that’s found naturally in all of our skin. It’s what gives that bounce and firmness. As you age your skin loses the firmness of the collagen, which is why it’s such a popular injectable. While no cream on earth can give you the same kind of results injections can, collagen applied topically can help hold in moisture, which can give a temporary plumping effect and help relieve fine lines caused by dryness. This is exactly what Holika Holika Pig Collagen Jelly Pack does.

There doesn’t seem to be anywhere else online with the English ingredients listed for this product so I took the opportunity to type them out for you:

hydrolyzed collagen extract, cyclopentasiloxane, cyclohexasiloxane, butylene glycol, glycerin, bis-peg-18, methyl ether dimethyl silane, polysorbate 20, water, peg-240/hdi copolymer bis-decyltertadeceth-20 ether, caprylyl glycol, ethylhexyglycerine, tropolone, zea mays (corn) starch, microcrystalline cellulose, sucrose, mannitol, mica, titanium dioxide, tocopheryl acetate, ci 77491, tin oxide, acrylates/c10-30 akyl acrylate crosspolymer, potassium hydroxide, adnesone, trehalose, beta-glucan, sodium hyaluronate, placental protein, phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin, dipropylene gylcol, portulaca olercea extract, rubus idaeus (raspberry) fruit extract, opunita ficus-indica stem extract, avena sativa (oat) meal extract, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, rosmarinus offininalis (rosemary) extract, lavandula angustifolia (lavender) extract, thymus vulgaris (thyme) extract, bergenia ciliata root extract, viola mandshurica flower extract, impatiens balsamina flower extract, honey extract, euterpe oleracea fruit extract, biosaccharide gum-1, arnica montana flower extract, gentiana lutea root extract, achillea millefolium extract, artemisia absinthium extract, gold, disodium edta, ci 17200, fragrance

You’ll notice the main ingredient is collagen, always a good sign when the namesake of the product is actually listed first in the ingredients. If you plug the list into the Cosdna website you’ll see that this is chock full of moisturizers and scores only a 1 on the scale for potential acne triggers. There’s also some notable anti-inflammatory ingredients and emollients. Basically this is an amazing, light, non-irritating, soothing, moisture bomb. There are other products on the market such as EGF, people often ask, what is EGF? EGF is a great anti-ageing product that works similarly to Pig-Collagen.

If you’re not familiar with sleeping packs, the quick rundown is it’s just an extra bonus treatment that works as you sleep. You follow your existing skincare routine, apply this product as your last step at night, go to bed as normal, and that’s it!

The texture is what I describe as creamy jell-o. It wiggles and jiggles but it also has a fluffy richness that’s not typical of a gelatine. If you’re worried about the potential smell, don’t be, this has a light baby floral scent. I say baby floral because it registers somewhere between floral and baby powder for me. The pack comes in a twist off jar packaging and includes a little spatula so you don’t have to potentially contaminate the jelly with your fingers. I always appreciate the included spatulas, plus when you’re done with the product you can always keep it for your jar creams. The colour is a light piggy pink colour and flecked throughout with little bits of actual gold.

As you can see from the picture this is a very light gel product, not a cream. It may feel a little occlusive for the first few minutes you apply it, but within 10 minutes it sinks into the skin leaving behind minimal stickiness for a product like this. I apply this about 15 minutes before bed and have never had any issue with pillow transfer or mess. Upon waking in the morning my skin definitely feels plumper and more moisturized than if I hadn’t worn the pack overnight. It’s never once broken me out and it’s always performed wonderfully. This product is light enough that even oily skin could use it in the winter should they feel they need a little moisture boost in certain areas overnight. In summer this is a great treatment to leave in the fridge for a refreshing cooling effect. Holika Holika Pig Collagen Jelly Pack reminds me somewhat of Clinique’s Moisture Surge in colour and even texture, but it works way better for me. It’s what I wish Moisture Surge actually was.

BENTON SNAIL BEE HIGH CONTENT LOTION REVIEW

 bentonsnailbeehighcontentlotion1
I had the highest hopes for this product. I don’t think I’ve ever put so much effort into getting a product to work for me.  Let’s just jump right into this and have a look at the ingredients:
Snail Secretion Filtrate, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Cetyl Ethyl Hexanoate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Niacinamide, Zanthoxylum Piperitum Fruit Extract, Pulsatilla Koreana Extract, Usnea Barbata (Lichen) Extract, Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Squalane, Urea, Human Ogliopeptide-1, Bee Venom, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Pentylene Glycol, Glyceryl Stearate, Stearic Acid, Cetostearyl Alcohol, Xanthan Gum, Tocopheryl Acetate, Bacillus Ferment, Azealic Acid, Alcea Rosea Root Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Panthenol, Beta-Glucan, Diospyros Kaki Leaf Extract, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Plantago Asiatica Extract, Laminaria Digitata Extract, Ulmus Campestris (Elm) Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Adenosine“Nooooooooo!” Was my first thought when I got a look at the ingredients list. While this is packed full of great natural ingredients, there’s also some decidedly unnatural, potentially triggering ingredients as well. I’m going to link you to my girl Skin & Tonic’s review for an in depth breakdown of the ingredients (because no one does it better lbr).

The lotion has a light consistency and is odorless, I think that’s about the only thing people can agree on about this product.  The reviews have been all over the place for this stuff. Some of my friends absolutely love it. Some people think it’s a mess. I think I’m somewhere in-between. When I first started using it, I found that it didn’t melt instantly into my skin the way other Benton products do. It tended to kind of sit on the face the way a physical sunblock does. I still wasn’t ready to give up on it because I actually liked the way my skin felt with it after it had finally sunk in. Soon after starting the trial I also added another product to my mix, Paula’s Choice BHA 2% liquid exfoliant . Once I had been using that for about a week I noticed the Benton lotion’s absorption improved dramatically. Despite the improvement I still wasn’t 100% satisfied, I kept toying with my routine and I found that adding some generous drops of my essential oil du jour with each pump of lotion(either passion fruit oil, baobab oil, or argan oil) made everything just right for me. This can be used either on it’s own, or as an emulsion step before your cream. I have an oiler skinned friend who found the steam cream to be too heavy for her and loves this lotion on it’s own as the last step in her routine. On the other hand I know someone who found this to be heavier than the steam cream and didn’t like it at all. Like I said, the reviews are all over the place on this one. Personally I use it as an emulsion before my cream, and it really works for me once I tweaked it just right.  I’ve also had no break outs and no irritation. However, as much as I love Benton and their products, I do hold them to a higher standard and I can’t give this the full 5 out of 5 turtles.

It does work nicely for me but the inclusion of the potential no-no ingredients and the slow absorption earns 3.5 out of 5 turtles.

IMPORTANT EDIT BENTON ALOE PROPOLIS SOOTHING GEL REVIEW IMPORTANT EDIT

EDIT: I was made aware Memebox has linked to this review without reaching out to me first, so I feel like I need to update this review. I hadn’t thought about this review in a long time as it was one of my very first reviews and one of the first Korean skincare brands I had ever used in a regime. Due to an incident with contamination that caused a lot of problems in some people’s skin, I now recommend that you all explore the COSRX brand Aloe Vera Oil Free Soothing Gel . If you’d still like to buy it and want to read this review, please feel free, I will leave it up.  But personally I cannot guarantee the safety of the Benton brand. At the time of this review, the contamination had not yet come to light.
Thank you so much for reading! <3 Happy skincare-ing!

This gel is another star in the Benton line. Like the toner I reviewed before this little green wonder is comprised mostly of aloe leaf juice which has solid proven skin benefits. Let’s take a look at the ingredients and see what we’ve got here.

Ingredients:
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (80%), Propolis Extract (10%), Glycerin, Arginine, Allantoin, Betaine, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Cross Polymer, Zanthoxylum Piperitum Fruit Extract, Pulsatilla Koreana Extract, Usnea Barbata (Lichen) Extract

Ingredients are listed on products from the most to the least and next up we have propolis extract. If you’re not familiar with it you might be wondering what the hell propolis extract is. If you’re an idiot like me you heard the word propolis and wondered if they had distilled the essence of some ancient Greek amphitheater but no, propolis is actually a product that bees produce. Propolis is the stuff that keeps the hive from rotting and keeps the germs at bay. It has antibacterial properties and has been used in natural medicines and biomedical research for it’s attributes as an antioxidant, an emollient, and as an antimicrobial. So propolis is actually pretty rad stuff and you want it on your face. I’d also like to point out that this gel touts it’s “8 free system” as they put it, which means it’s free of 8 gnarly things you don’t want in your skincare which are parabens, mineral oil, alcohol, benzophenon, chemical preservatives, steroids, artificial fragrance, and artificial colouring. Another thing that really stands out to me is this product is water free! Go grab your nearest moisturizer or product and read the list of ingredients, go on now, go head, I’ll wait. Ok, are you back? Look at that bastard. What’s the first ingredient? It’s Eau isn’t it? If it’s not Eau then it’s Aqua, and if it’s not Aqua they went the plain route and just said Water. Eau, Aqua, Water, same difference and that’s the #1 most prominent ingredient. The Benton Aloe gel replaces water with aloe leaf juice! So it’s just that much more moisturizing and high quality. I definitely agree with their claims that this product is for every single skin type. It holds benefits for every one across the board and that’s pretty impressive. Sensitive skin will love this because of how soothing it is, oily skin will love how light it is, dry skin is going to love how moisturizing it is, and every skin is going to love how much it nourishes. This is a little skincare gigolo and it’s got thrills for everyone.

The fragrance is pretty much nonexistent and it only carries it’s natural aloe scent. Now, I had someone bring to my attention that the other natural aloe products they’ve used in the past were too sticky and they wondered if this, and the aloe toner reviewed earlier, were sticky as well. I can tell you this product, as well as the Benton BHA Aloe Toner, are absolutely not sticky at all. The texture is a light clear gel that glides onto your skin and absorbs pretty quickly upon application. As far as it’s moisturizing benefits I would say that an oily skin type could probably get away with using this alone as their primary moisturizer. Personally I use it in my regime along with the Benton steam cream (another upcoming review). I adhere to a Korean skincare routine which I will write about in detail later but basically the bones of it go like this: cleanser-toner-essence-gel-cream. If it’s summer and you’re oily you could forgo the cream. I myself have a normal to dry skin type and I’m in the midst of a harsh dry winter right now so I couldn’t get away with the gel only. I’m going to venture to say though in summer months I probably could. One suggestion though that I took from the wonderful http://www.skinandtonics.com/ blog is to squirt out your product and add a few drops of argan, maracuja, or baobab oil to your gel for that extra oomph. I do that now and I really love the results. So the Benton Aloe Propolis gel would be a good asset to your skincare team, and with the impressive resume it has behind it you should be hiring.
The Benton Aloe Propolis Gel gets a full five out of five turtles. Another great job, Benton!
