SPIDER PUFF CLEANSER REVIEW

spiderpuffcleaner

I would be lying if I said it wasn’t the name alone that got me interested in this product. As I’m sure you can tell by my review of the silk cocoon peeling balls, just about anything with even a hint of weird catches my eye. I think it almost goes without saying that something called The Spider Puff Cleanser was certainly going to have a home with me.

Fear not arachnophobes, there isn’t actually any spiders contained within this neat little bottle. I’m pretty sure it’s called Spider Puff because they’re trying to impart to you that this is a delicate yet strong product, like a spider’s web. They say in the Korean ad copy that being rough with your skin causes damage and aging, and that this product is a gentle but through way to clean. Whatever the reason it’s called Spider Puff Cleanser,  it sure makes for a great packaging and or branding.

This little bottle comes with a soft textured pink top. It feels exactly like velour, who knows, this might have had a home as J Lo tracksuit in another life.

A quick look at the instructions tells us how to use this pink wonder. It’s fairly straight forward, wet the sponge, then turn it to the ‘on’ position, squeeze a bit, then go to town on your face, massaging in a circular motion. The textured top actually feels really nice on the skin and makes a hell of a great lather. It’s very gentle but feels like you’re actually getting clean, like a super duper soft manual alternative to a Clairsonic. The scent is a typical soapy smell, very fresh and pleasant. The lather is gentle and non-drying yet did give a thorough clean as promised. It was refreshing, mild, yet still effective. I also appreciate the fact that it’s self contained and very travel friendly. Mama ain’t got no time for mess. I got this product on a novel whim but found that I actually quite liked it! It’s a nice, fun, easy way to cleanse! It was a pleasant surprise, a phrase not often associated with anything that has the word spider in it.

4 out of 5 turtles for you Spider Puff.

NATURAL COCOON SILK PEELING BALLS REVIEW

naturalsilkpeelingball

I’ve tried some pretty ‘out there’ things on this journey of reviewing products for you guys. I’ve tried bird poop masks, snail slime & bee venom concoctions, donkey milk cream, the list goes on and on. Honestly, there’s not much I wouldn’t do in the name of discovering new cool things for you all to add to your beauty routine. When I came across the opportunity to review these cocoons, I jumped at the chance.

Natural Cocoon Peeling Silk Balls are the actual cocoons woven by silkworms. They are made of 100% silk with no other additives. But I’m getting ahead of myself here, first I should explain what these little guys even do. These are meant to cleanse and exfoliate your face. If your face is doing anything other than the “lolwut” look right now, kudos to you and you’re a better man than I am, because that’s exactly what mine was doing at first. I’m going to let the Memebox website (where I found these little guys) explain everything:

Close in composition to skin proteins, Grand Plan’s Natural Cocoon Peeling Silk Balls are made with 100% natural silk and no added chemical ingredients. These luxuriously soft cocoons will gently exfoliate and hydrate your skin, removing impurities, dead cells, and makeup residue to reveal the all-natural, baby-smooth complexion underneath.

WHAT IT DOES
Exfoliate
Cleanse
Hydrate
Nourish

KEY INGREDIENTS
100% Natural Silk

.
Makes sense now? Awesome. Now let’s get to how to use them:

HOW TO USE
Soak peeling balls in lukewarm water for 3 minutes.
When moist and soft, place on fingertips through opening (if too small, cut slightly to widen).
Massage skin with fingertips in circular motion.

Any impurities on the cocoons are harmless and gained naturally through the production process. Simply wash them off with warm water.

So after I followed the instructions and fit these little silk balls on my fingers, I got to work massaging my face. It didn’t feel weird or strange, but to be quite honest it wasn’t the most pleasant of smells emanating from the wet cocoons. However, it wasn’t all that bad, just real…uh, natural. With that being said these did give a gentle, effective manual exfoliation and my skin was left feeling extremely soft and smooth afterward. I’m not a huge proponent of manual exfoliators, but this one felt very soft while still being thorough enough to make a difference.  I noticed after using these they picked up a lot of oil and dirt, as was evident on the formerly pristine white balls. Afterward they darkened and had schmutz on them as you can see below. It was surprising how much stuff these picked up as I had already washed my face beforehand.

These are quite the novel thing to use. Not exactly practical as you have to soak them, fit them on your fingers, and then dry them (you can reuse them a couple of times apparently). But, they do honestly work! And to those of you who worship all natural products, it doesn’t get any closer to nature than rubbing a moth’s bachelor pad on your face! If you’re into having odd new experiences and love nature, I suggest giving these a spin 🙂 Make it a theme night and eat the worm out of your tequila beforehand.
Nature Cocoon Silk Peeling Balls get a 4 out of 5 turtles (but a 5 out of 5 turtles for novelty and overall fun!).

SKINFOOD BLACK SUGAR CLEANSING OIL

skinfoodblacksugarcleansingoil

When I bring up oil cleansing as part of a two step cleansing process to people, more than half of the time they scrunch up their face at me and tell me that don’t have time for that. Some people are too obtuse to reason with, but those of us who are on the two step cleansing train already know how great it is. Stubborn waterproof makeup, sunblock, bb cream, mascara, all gone in a gentle instant. If you’re not already doing the two step cleansing routine, you should definitely be at least willing to give it a try. I’m almost positive you’ll never go back to doing things the old way! I’ve tried a variety of oil and sherbet cleansers, the most recent being Skinfood Black Sugar Cleansing Oil.

Let me start by telling you what I love about this particular oil cleanser, the pump. It has a long narrow hooked spout that perfectly dispenses what can sometimes be a messy product. Each time you depress the pump it gives you the perfect amount. The oil itself is, well, oily of course. I put it on my dry face and gently massage away my makeup. I find this works wonders on my insanely stubborn Tony Moly gel eyeliner and waterproof mascaras.

As effective as this cleansing oil  is you might think you would have a hard time rinsing it clean. Absolutely not! It rinses clean with minimal effort. After you’ve used and rinsed away this oil cleanser, you follow up with your normal cream or foaming cleanser.

My sole complaint about this is the scent. Since it’s called Black Sugar one would assume it would smell, well, sugary. At the very least somewhere on the baked goods scale, but nope, this stuff smells like straight up PineSol. It has the most misleading name ever! It’s so lemony and antiseptic scented that as great as this stuff works, I find myself dreading using it. That being said, scent preference is so subjective, someone else might absolutely love the smell, this is just a personal opinion of mine. The product itself works great, the dispenser is great, the scent is it’s only negative.

TONY MOLY RELAXING AQUA MARINE SHERBET CLEANSER REVIEW

TMRASCSherbet cleansers are going to be another one of those products I’m going to have to explain if you’re not already familiar with them.  In an Asian skincare routine, there is typically a two step process during nighttime cleansing that involves two different products. The first one is traditionally an oil cleanser to remove your makeup, followed up by your regular foaming cleanser. Sherbet cleansers are basically a solidified oil cleanser. Liquid oil cleansers work wonderfully, but some people eschew them for the sherbet style cleansers due to their ease of use. The liquid oil type has a pretty messy nature. It also has a tendency to get into the eyes, leaving you with an annoying temporary hazy film. The solid sherbet cleansers are a lot easier to handle and won’t dribble everywhere.

The most famous sherbet cleanser is probably the Banilla Co. Clean it Zero cleansing balm. The second is probably the Tony Moly Relaxing Aqua Marine Sherbet Cleanser, which is what I’ll be reviewing for you today.

TMAMSCCTony Moly Aqua Marine Sherbet Cleaner has a texture that’s something like that lemon ice cup dessert you can get from street vendors, if it were somehow able to be room temperature without melting. Kind of like butter straight out of the fridge before it gets soft. It’s a strange texture and hard to describe!

Once you scoop some out,  you can rub it with your fingertips and melt it down to a more oil like consistency. Next, you apply it to your face in a massaging motion as you would any makeup remover. It has a sort of vaguely citrusy smell that’s very subtle and refreshing. It glides all over with minimal effort, which is exactly what you want when dealing with the skin in the delicate eye area. It does a pretty decent job of removing your makeup. It completely rids your face of bb creams, foundation, base, blush, eyeshadows and even waterproof mascara. I used it here to remove the extremely tenacious Tony Moly Backstage Gel Eyeliner and the remnants of some MAC Fluidline and ELF gel liner. As you can see, it removed all but the very faintest ghost trace of the Tony Moly, which was easily removed with the foaming cleanser afterward.TMASCsw2Excuse my red skin, that has nothing to do with the cleanser, my skin is extremely reactive to the slightest friction, it goes back to normal in a minute or two lol.

Now, your face is most definitely not going to feel clean after using this product. Keep in mind that it’s a makeup remover and not a stand alone cleanser. You’ll be left with a kind of oily film on your face. Not to worry though, that’s where your foaming cleanser comes in and the two step process begins.
After you’ve used the sherbet to gently massage away your makeup, you wash your face with your favourite regular cleanser. It completely removes the oily feeling left by your sherbet or oil cleanser, leaving you with clean skin. I find that the Tony Moly Relaxing Aqua Sherbet Cleanser is removed a lot easier than some cleansing oils I’ve tried. All in all this is a pretty fool proof method for throughly removing makeup and experimenting with two step night cleansing. Using two cleansers might seem like overkill and take some getting used to, but together they do things that neither one could do alone.
Tony Moly Relaxing Aqua Sherbet Cleanser gets  4 out of 5 turtles.
