PREGNANCY SKINCARE GUIDE: THE FIRST TRIMESTER

pregnancy-skincare-guide
If you follow me on Instagram, you may know that my husband and I welcomed our second (enormous 10.2 pound) child 7 weeks ago. Throughout my pregnancy, I made note of my routine and documented the changes in my skincare regime as time passed. Now that I’ve come through to the postpartum side, I’ve broken down my changing routines for each trimester. Today is the first in a three-part series.

Pregnancy is a time to really pause and take stock of the self-care and pampering you can do for yourself. You’re forced to slow down in almost every area of your life, and there can be a real beauty in that. During pregnancy, you’re hyper-aware of everything going on in your body, and there are challenges that come with each trimester. But the most important thing to realize is that this is your time, things are about to get chaotic, so please indulge yourself. You’re growing a whole other human in your body, pamper yourself! You deserve this, mama! If you’re experiencing a pregnancy currently, please take this as a hint to slow down and take time to care for yourself. However, if there are women here who are struggling to get pregnant, don’t worry. These days, there are a lot of things that can be used to increase your chances of getting pregnant. For example, by using some ovulation strips from Countrywide Testing (learn more here), women can find out when they’re ovulating, increasing their chances of conceiving and becoming pregnant. Hopefully, that will help you to become a mother! But, be prepared for the side effects of pregnancy!

First Trimester:
Ugh, this might just be the worst time. You’re beyond exhausted, everything makes you sick, and you have no idea why. You are keenly aware of how long the road ahead of you is, and you might feel discouraged and just plain yucky. You still look the same, but my god, you do not feel the same. The first trimester is when I had to seriously alter my routine because of severe morning sickness. Scents that I usually tolerated or even loved were just too much for me. I gagged at just about everything. I had to seriously scale back and go super boring. However, boring can still be effective, and you can still sneak in some much-needed pampering.

Cleansers:
Foaming:
I had to forgo my usuals and go back to basics with the CerAve Foaming Facial Cleanser. The reason? It’s pretty much fragrance-free, it has the proper 5.5 pH we all know and love, and it gets the job done efficiently while being exceptionally mild.
Grab your CerAve in a two pack at Amazon here or as an add on item for only $8 here
Also available for a great price at Ulta hereOil/Sherbet:
Trying to find a fragrance free or lightly scented oil cleanser was a harder job, I had to just find a scent I was OK with and go from there. I ended up using the old school standard Banila Co Clean It Zero balm, which is good, but no longer a favourite of mine as the market has exploded with great, new, innovative, cleansers since then. But Clean it Zero didn’t smell offensive, and it got the job done, which is all you want when you’re dying to sleep and not throw up again.

Toner: Same criteria for cleansers, please don’t stink, and please work nicely. What fit the bill? Nooni Sprout Smoothing Toner. This is a great little basic toner that contains some wonderful natural ingredients and reminds me a bit of the Mizon AHA BHA toner in terms of effectiveness (remember, the AHA BHA toner does not actually exfoliate). While not entirely without fragrance, the Nooni Sprout Smoothing Toner has a very delicate fresh scent that disappears almost immediately upon application. It’s a great option for people with sensitive skin and I enjoyed using it. It can be difficult knowing what toners are best for exfoliating and what is best in general for the health of your skin, especially through pregnancy; you can learn more when you visit blog.reneerouleau.com. This is useful information for all skin types and for all people wondering how to improve their skin properly, whether pregnant or not.

Acid:
Consult your doctor before using acids during pregnancy. I’ve heard varying things from various doctors, but personally, my doctor said a BHA 2% and below would be safe, so I went with that. (and my son is just fine, so I guess it really was safe for me). I used Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant all over my face at night to treat the very mild breakouts I was having. I didn’t want to stress my skin or moisture barrier too much so I left it at that. What I love about the Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, is the addition of green tea extract to soothe and the Methylpropanediol which helps the BHA penetrate while leaving your skin feeling moist. That’s an important feature to someone with dry skin sitting around for the allotted 10-20 minutes you have to wait for it to work before proceeding on with the rest of your routine. Without that, I’d dry up like a mummy. There is also a gel version that a lot of oilier skin folks love. After the BHA I’d try to get my pamper on by slipping on a sheet mask. My favourite was Soo Ae Freeset Donkey Milk Skin Gel Mask Aqua. Free of harsh fragrance and full of a buffet of excellent skincare ingredients. It both relaxed me, and gave me another 20 minutes of laying in my bed before getting up and having to complete the rest of my routine. Yes, the mask and BHA added another 40 minutes to my routine, but that was 40 minutes of me just laying there collecting my thoughts, daydreaming, and thinking about all the great things to come.
pregnancy-guide-serum
Essence:
My beloved Shark Sauce all the way. I usually do multiple essences and serums, but I was just not up for the task for the first three months. Thank the skincare gods for Shark Sauce being such a powerhouse, it really carried my skin on through the tough times and brought me out to the other side still glowing.
pregnancy-guide-emulsion
Emulsion:
Again, hard to find a formula I liked with no scent, so I ended up sticking with what I had been using before, Cosrx OIL-FREE Ultra-Moisturizing Lotion with Birch Sap. While this is fragranced, I was lucky enough that it was a fragrance that didn’t turn my stomach. If you’ve ever smelled Aveda’s Sap Moss shampoo, that is the scent almost exactly, only milder. It’s a very earthy scent and thankfully I love earthy scents and for some reason it didn’t set me off. I have a complete review of this product in the pipeline, but I will say that I absolutely love this product. I’m still using it to this day.

Oil:
I spent my first trimester in the midst of a really frigid winter, so as wonderful as my Cosrx oil-free lotion is, it wasn’t cutting it for my dry skin all alone. Keep in mind I was out walking in temperatures like -20 with nasty winds whipping around, so this is not knocking the Cosrx at all, it was just used in extreme conditions. To supplement my lotion I would alternate between adding Holy Snails Perseids Oil or Whamisa Organic Flowers Facial Oil (get 15% off your order with my referral code http://i.refs.cc/Mxk05ta7 !), two excellent oil blends. Sometimes I would apply it directly on the face and sometimes I’d mix it right in with Cosrx lotion depending on how I was feeling. They both worked great! If your skin isn’t dry like mine, or if you’re going through a summertime pregnancy, feel free to skip this step, but for me it was a necessity. Both of these oils are almost entirely without a funky smell, unlike a lot of other oils that I regularly use. I was thankful they worked perfectly without any offensive odour. I have heard of other expectant moms who have had great success with combining oil with a derma roller to give them a glowy complexion.ljh-tea-tree-cream
Cream:
LJH Tea Tree 80 Cream
With early pregnancy sometimes comes hormonal acne, with acne comes irritation. Hit back with it’s arch enemy, tea tree. LJH Tea Tree 80 Cream is made with 80% tea tree extract, a powerful combatant of irritation, and natural antiseptic. Tea tree oils and extracts have been used since ancient times to treat cuts, abrasions, and other maladies of the skin, it’s got a serious track record. I was happy to have a no nonsense cream that would address hydration as well as the trouble my poor hormonal skin was facing. This cream did it all, and I couldn’t have been happier with it.
Available at Memebox here (where at the time of publication, is on sale for $35!)

And for Canadians at Bisou here So that sums up my first three months! Everyone’s experiences vary, but this routine is what worked for me and my particular needs and concerns. Remember, you don’t have to be pregnant to enjoy these products, every single one of them are top notch, knocked up or not 😉

ROSE ROUND-UP; TREATS IN BLOOM

RoseRoundup
Valentines has come and gone, the roses received as tokens of affection have long since died. However, my love of rose infused/influenced/enhanced products is immortal.  Although not my favourite flower in a bouquet, products containing rose have always been a huge draw for me as a consumer. The fragrance, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and moisturizing properties make rose something that always catches my eye when I’m looking for intriguing goodies.  I’ve also come to find that rose as a flavouring knocks it out of the park when it comes to adding that little extra something to an otherwise run of the mill treat.
My rose romance started with the now cult classic Sum37 Miracle Rose Cleansing stick, the cushy luxurious cleansing stick sparked something collectively within us, and given the number of rose products on the market, our rosy affair continues. I’ve gathered up a bouquet of my favourite rose delights for you here today, and you don’t even have to worry about thorns!

recipe rose petal cleansing oil
Re:cipe Rose Petal Cleansing oil
Since a rose cleanser started this whole rose journey, might as well start off with another. A cleansing oil infused with real rose petals to rejuvenate and hydrate the skin for a brighter, more radiant complexion. I personally love this oil, it’s my new HG oil (review here). Some people are put off by the strong rose aroma, but I personally delight in it! Available at Memebox USA here , and Bisou Beauty Bar here for Canadians.

Whamisa Organic Flowers Damask Rose Petal Mist
Whamisa Organic Flowers Damask Rose Petal Mist
An unbeatable mist, the best one I’ve ever laid my hands on. This mist’s ingredients put it on par with a particularly effective toner in a pinch. It’s also gorgeous, don’t act like you don’t care about gorgeousness 😉 It’s available here at Glow Recipe where you can get 15% off your order by ordering through my referral link http://i.refs.cc/Mxk05ta7 or here at Tester Korea

Isoi Bulgarian Rose Water-full Cream
Isoi Bulgarian Rose Water-full Cream
With it’s first listed ingredient being Shea butter, this deeply moisturizing cream combines the power of rose with some heavy hitting yet all natural hydrating components. The texture of this cream is lush and gorgeous,  it’s kind of like the cream version of the Sum:37 rose cleansing stick, although not as rosy smell wise. This is a little hard to come by, but it’s here on ebay , here on Korea Depart, and here on Sasa.

Kracie FUWARINKA Beauty Rose Gum
Fuwarinka Chewing Gum Beauty Rose
“Beauty Gum, as it is called in Japan, freshens your breath while providing your body with its beneficial ingredients. Vitamin C, Collagen, and Hyaluronan. The flavor is very accurate as it contains Damask Rose Oil.” I don’t know how “beneficial” this gum actually is but it is certainly delightful. With a delicate rose flavour, I love to chew on this gum post meal when I’m out dining with friends.  Be sure to carry backup though, because once people see it everyone wants a piece! Available here on ebay and here on NapaJapan

Squish Rose Gummies
Squish Red Roses Paint Can
If you want the beauty of the rose but aren’t quite on board with eating one, Squish candy has these almost unbelievably flavoured rose gummies. From their website:
These beautifully-shaped gummy roses are a much tastier alternative to a bouquet of blooming red roses. Gorgeous shades of light and dark red, filled with luscious fruit flavours of raspberry, strawberry, cherry, black currant and hints of rose.” Mmmm pure love. The flavour is so intense and delicious, you’ll be instantly spoiled and never want to have cheap corner store candy again. At least, that’s what happened here in my house! Available from Squish artisanal candies and gummies here, shipping currently to the USA and Canada.

dillon's rose gin
Dillion’s Small Batch Rose Gin
For a grown-up touch of rose, you can’t beat Dillion’s Rose Gin. It’s a traditional dry gin infused with rose hips, rose petals, and then sweetened. The rose aftertaste is the most delightful thing I’ve experienced since I got to the point in life where I didn’t have to always go with the crappy cheap stuff. Oh, the dark days before I discovered how to make a proper cocktail.  Speaking of cocktails, your gin based ones will never be the same if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on a bottle of this. It’s a little hard to come by, in that it’s currently only sold in Ontario (grab it online here). But give them a shout and see if they can’t hook something up for you. It’s well worth the effort and at $50 Canadian a 750ml bottle, very reasonably priced.

CLIO Stay Shine Lip Syrup Naked Rose
Clio Stay Shine Lip Syrup in #06 Naked Rose
I can’t do a rose roundup and not include a gorgeous rosy lip! Leave it to Clio, known for their inventive, high quality, (not to mention FUN) lip products, to bring us a new fav. Matte lips are still all the rage, but sometimes you want a sexy sultry alternative . Gotta switch it up and shine every once in awhile, and shine you will. This super plush syrup has a high refractive index, making your lips look plump and juicy. I love this shade, Naked Rose, because it would work for just about anyone, it’s a beautiful universal rosy nude.  The coverage is build-able, so you can go with more colour or a sheerer wash, depending on your preference. You can’t go wrong by adding this rose to your current lip bouquet. Available directly here at Club Clio USA if you’re in the States, or on ebay here

I hope this walk through the rose garden has awoken your senses, don’t be afraid to reach out and pluck something for someone, conversely, there ain’t no shame in pluckin’ (somethin for) yourself~

RE:CIPE ROSE PETAL CLEANSING OIL & GREEN TEA SLOWGANIC CLEANSER REVIEW

recipe slowganic and oil swCleansing. There’s a reason that “lather rinse repeat” is shorthand for tedium, boredom, and the humdrum tasks we must do in life. Washing your face is one such task that’s usually pretty boring. It’s fairly hard to get excited about a cleanser, the last time the masses got excited was around the Miracle Rose Cleansing Stick, which will always be a favourite but I’m a thrill seeker. It’s been a while and I’m always on the lookout for something new. Fortunately, I had InsiderBeauty send me some excitement.

First of all, just let me say how much I love InsiderBeauty. Browsing through their curations you’d be hard pressed to find a dud in the bunch. Everything is wonderful! I am continually impressed with what they choose to stock their store with. Every single time I hit up the What’s New section I’m like “OMG yes, yes, yes, and yes, get in my cart”. I also love that they have free shipping on orders over $35 and $5 shipping on orders less than that. They’re really a pleasure to deal with and I highly recommend shopping with them! (and no, I’m not at all paid to say that, I just really enjoy their selection, pricing, and professionalism).

Back to the cleansers. Wooooo boy!
I’m going to start backwards and talk about the most unique of the pair, the Green Tea Slowganic Cleanser. This stuff is so neat! I’m going to try really hard to describe the texture but I don’t think I’m going to be able to properly convey to you how weird (in a good way!) it is. It’s bouncy like jello, but more firm like icecream. It would be kinda of like of a porous gelatine had a baby with a thickest mousse imaginable, yet it’s light and airy. See? It makes no sense!
recipie green tea slowganic cleanser
Fanserviced has a great video of it in action from her amazing post about fun cleansers
https://youtube.com/watch?v=TjrRmC2S_6g

Insider Beauty describes it on their site as
“Carefully hand-made with 98% natural ingredients, this bouncy, souffle-like texture will slowly melt into a soothing and rich foam, dissolving impurities while retaining skin’s critical moisture barrier. Infused with 12 organic ingredients including green tea, this pH-balanced cleanser will leave your skin feeling soft, comfortable, and freshly clean.”
I thought it would be way more unwieldily to deal with than it actually is. It’s actually quite easy to get the hang of once you use it a couple of times. No, it’s not as easy as lazily tossing off a few squirts of liquid cleanser (oh my, that sounds so naughty) but it is a hell of a lot of fun using the provided spatula to dig into the jiggly solid mousse and getting out a small chunk to use. And the foamy mousse it suds up into is very creamy and nice. I can’t speak for the lemon version as I haven’t tried it yet, but the green tea version does not dry out my already dry face. It’s a very gentle, effective, cleansing. It leaves my face soft, clean, and happy! It also has a pH of 5.5 which is perfect!

Now, onto the other treasure, the Rose Petal Cleansing Oil. I mentioned the Sum37 Miracle Rose Cleansing Stick earlier, and actually, this reminds of of Miracle Rose’s oil cousin. Both have rose petals, both smell amazing, and both will expertly remove your makeup and sunscreen as a first step cleanser. I’m going to go farther and say that for me, this removes tough makeup even better than the Miracle Rose. The Recipe Rose Petal Cleansing Oil is so far, and by far, the only first step cleanser that has been able to remove ALL traces of my Duo brand eyelash glue. Duo glue is the devil, that shit is so difficult to remove from my very delicate eyelids and this cleaner just melts that stuff off like it’s nothing. As someone with both sensitive and delicate eyes, this is a godsend. I am cursed with straight, short eyelashes on my top lids, I wear false eyelashes almost every single day, the glue is irritating and it’s removal has always been a problem for me. I’ve used some excellent cleansers that removed all traces of my point makeup, and even then I’d still have a bit of residue left. This is the first oil cleanser I’ve tried that gets rid of everything and gets rid of it with a very gentle ease! Here it is up against TonyMoly Backstage Gel Liner (and some bb cream) which is the difficult standard to which I test all oil cleansers:

Hello Adele, now goodbye

Gone!
recipie rose petal cleansing oil after

See? Like a knife through hot butter, it just cuts all through the shit. Easy peasy. And the smell, man, I loooove the smell. If you don’t like rose you probably won’t like this cleanser because the scent is strong. For me that’s a plus, I love it. I am a sucker for rose scents so this is like HG status for me as far as oil cleansers go. By far, this is my top pick for oil cleansers personally. It’s one of those products that hits all the markers for me. So if you like rose, and want to make sure you’ve gotten rid of even your craziest makeup, this is for you.

Both of these cleansers used as a team has been so A+ for me. I have a feeling I’ll be sticking with these for along while. In fact, I’ve already gotten myself backups!

Five out of five turtles PLUS another one for being so gentle, effective, and putting the fun back into my cleansing routine!

ILLI TOTAL AGE CARE CLEANSING WATER REVIEW

illitotalagecarecleansingwater
I feel like a salty old sea dog when it comes to beauty products but once in a great while,  a product comes along and I’m like “wtf..where does this fit into my routine?”.  It’s been a long time since that happened to me, but when I saw the Illi Total Age Cleansing Water on the InsiderBeauty store website, I was kind of lost. Illi is one of my favourite brands right now, I am having a serious love affair with their Total Age Care body products and getting compliments left and right ever since I started using them. They smell heavenly and they make my skin insanely soft. I had yet to try anything from their face care line but I figured it had to be good if it was even half as effective as the body care line.

I guess I should start with what a cleansing water even is! I wasn’t entirely sure myself so I reached out to InsiderBeauty for some illumination on the subject of how to use this product correctly and they sent me this reply:

So, the simple instruction is soak the cotton pad with the cleansing water and sweep away the makeup on eyes, lips, and face. They advertise the product as an all-in-one cleansing product without the need to wash off with water, but most Korean reviewers and bloggers seem to use it as the first part of their double cleanse. It’s slightly acidic so it mildly tones your skin, and also contains Polyol, which is awater-soluable moisturizer. It’s an incredible cleanser/skincare product with lots of nourishing ingredients like green tea, ginseng, and camellia oil that leave your skin feeling great.

Ahhh! I’ve got it now!

Also from the InsiderBeauty website is this description:

A cult favorite in Korea – remove all face and eye makeup debris with illi’s anti-oxidant rich cleansing water with one gentle sweep. Formulated with ginseng root extract, beans, camellia flower extracts, and green tea extracts from Jeju Island, your skin will absorb nutrients upon contact and be left soothed and refreshed. Total Age Cleansing Water guarantees comfort and easy for makeup removing efficacy while brightening and retaining skin’s moisture barrier.

  • Green tea extract is filled with anti-oxidants to soothe skin and combat free radicals
  • Ginseng root extract activates skin’s metabolism helping tone and firm skin
  • Camellia flower extract is rich in vitamins A, B, and E

So essentially, a cleansing water is almost like a makeup remover, only it contains skin beneficial ingredients and doesn’t need to be washed away afterward, unless you want to follow up as part of your double cleansing routine. This Illi cleansing water in particular is, in short, gorgeous. It smells gorgeous, it works gorgeous, it just is gorgeous. The smell is really just intoxicating to me. If you’re familiar with the Total Age Care body care line, it’s the exact same scent, a beautiful subtle floral (the scent is really reminiscent of the Hayul Chrysanthemum serum). I wish it were a perfume so I could wear it.

It does a really great job of removing point makeup. Here I’ve swatched Tonymoly Backstage Gel Liner, Clio Gelpresso Waterproof Pencil Shadow, 3 Concept Eyes Eyeshadow Palette shadow, Etude House Look At My Eyes Cafe Eyeshadow, 3 Concept Eyes Lipstick in the shade V, The Face Shop Cream Blusher, and Peripera Wholly Deep Jewel Pot on my arm, which are all tough customers when it comes to tenacity and pigmentation
illitotalagecarewatersw

And here’s what happened after one very light pass with the cotton ball, and then a more thorough cleansing. As you can see, it removed every trace of makeup and deposited it onto the cotton pad! (I used my favourite Cosrx Cotton Puffs for the job.)
illitotalagecarecleansingwatersw

And while this is positioned as a makeup remover, I really like using this first thing in the morning in place of a face wash with water. Instead of using my foaming cleanser, I sweep this across my face instead. It’s crazy refreshing and does a great job preparing my skin for the rest of my routine. Used in the traditional makeup remover way, this does a really nice job removing point makeup. It even removes my Tonymoly gel liner! However, it doesn’t do well removing waterproof western mascara, so if you’re using this as part of double cleanse, you’re definitely going to have to follow up with an oil or sherbet cleanser to completely remove waterproof mascara. I wouldn’t recommend completely replacing your oil/sherbet cleanser with this anyway, as handy and revolutionary as it is, your face still needs a deeply thorough removal of sunscreen and I wouldn’t trust that to anything but an oil/sherbet cleanser! That being said, there is definitely room for this in your routine, it’s a great product for correcting any accidental “oops” you might have done with your makeup, for refreshing your skin on a nasty day (hello hot yoga! I’m going to get another bottle of this strictly for my gym bag!), and for a gentle water-free morning cleanse. Illi has me believing they can do no wrong, this is an excellent product and coming in at under $20 it won’t break the bank either!  I haven’t even seen it anywhere on eBay or Amazon yet, so as far as I know it’s only available at InsiderBeauty (If I’m wrong let me know in the comments!) here http://insiderbeauty.com/collections/skincare/products/total-age-cleansing-water
