SULWHASOO SKIN CLARIFYING MASK REVIEW

sulwashoo

It looks like honey, it smells like a Korean herb shop, and when you peel it off it makes you feel like a freshly molted snake with shiny new skin. That might not sound appealing to you (however, it is a-peeling har har har) but this is one serious mask that deserves you consideration.

The Sulwhasoo Skin Clarifying Mask is somewhat of a cult favourite in the Korean skincare world. It’s a thick syrupy product that dries solid onto your skin. It sucks up impurities and excess oil, and takes them along with it once it’s peeled off. From their website’s product description
This unique honey-textured treatment is formulated with small solomonseal powder to absorb impurities and Japanese honeysuckle to hydrate, smooth, and brighten. The powerful blend of Korean medicinal herbs exfoliates and purifies for a smoother, brighter, clearer complexion.

suwashooclarifyingmask

As you can see here it really is a goopy honey like texture. It then dries into a solid, pliable, almost rubbery covering that is peeled off in one fluid motion.
The thing I love about this mask is you can actually feel it working as it dries. Not only that, it somehow does the impossible task of being effective and yet not drying out your skin. That’s no small task. It’s a miracle for a drier skin like mine that still wants to do a clarifying treatment. And yet it’s also wonderful for oily skin as well since it does purify and absorb excess sebum. I really love how Korean products manage to be so effective and yet work for so many different skin types. This mask, like other peeling masks will aid in removing dead skin, and when applied thick enough it has been known to remove blackheads along with the rest of the gunk. It’s not quite as effective as a pore strip, but it can certainly help with them. There’s something oddly cathartic about peeling off this mask and starting the day with the debris of yesterday removed. When you reveal the fresher skin underneath it’s like you’re a new person ready for what’s to come. Maybe I’m reading too much into it but it’s almost poetic, I love it.
Some people might be concerned with the smell of this mask. Personally I love it. It’s like a stronger Aveda smell. I can only describe the smell as intense and herbal with a hint of floral. Even if you don’t care for the scent, for the results it gives it’s worth putting up with for the 20-30 minutes it suggests you let it sit on your face.

I truly like this mask a lot. It’s a little on the expensive side,  so if you want to sample it’s goodness first before committing to a full sized tube you can get samples of it on ebay here

THE FACE SHOP MILD PAPAYA PEELING REVIEW

TheFaceShopMildPapayaPeelingEven sensitive skins sometimes want the satisfying feeling of a good exfoliation, but most products are entirely too harsh. Or maybe you have normal skin and just want something gentle to get the job done without any irritation. Enter The Face Shop’s Mild Papaya Peeling.
This is an extremely mild gommage style gel. If you’re not familiar with what a gommage is, it’s a gel that pills up into little balls when rubbed. As you rub the product around, the little balls gently pick up dead skin and roll it away. All the while the gel consistency lubricates and keeps the irritation from the friction to a minimum. This is an ideal manual exfoliation process for sensitive skin, especially if you’ve found scrubs to be too harsh in the past.
TheFaceShopMildPapayaPeelingswatch
As you can see here, this is what it looks like when first pumped out and then how it looks after some rubbing. It’s so easy to use, you apply it to a dry face, and then massage in a circular motion. This both exfoliates and stimulates circulation. The more you rub, the more it turns into these little balls, facilitating your exfoliation. Here is the official product information from The Face Shop’s English language website”

  •  150 ml
  •  All Skin Types

*Natural papaya enzyme ingredients softly remove dead skin cells without irritation

*Minimizes irritation with 5 free formula (Free from paraben, alcohol, anima ingredients, mineral oil, artificial coloring)

Application

After drying face, pump the product 1~2 times and apply it on the entire face, avoiding the eye and mouth area. Massage for 30 seconds and wash off when the dead skin cells come off.”

This claims that the papaya enzymes help with the peeling. It may indeed contain them but you’re just washing them all down the drain once you rinse. It’s not like you’re leaving it on your face for a chemical exfoliation. What actually does the exfoliating here is the manual motion, and it does a pretty nice job. Of course this isn’t going to be as effective as a scrub, but it’s also not going to bring the irritation and roughness of one either. You can also get away with using this way more often than you could a harsher manual exfoliant. Theres no suggested usage but I would say you could safely use this a couple of times a week if you’d like.

I really enjoy using this product for what it is, a gentle alternative to scrubs. It’s a pleasant experience and it could work for a very broad spectrum of skin types.

ROYAL GOLD RADIANT SERUM & ROYAL GOLD RADIANT CREAM REVIEW

royalgoldserumcream

Could someone be a dear and fetch me my crown? What’s what? I don’t have a crown? Well, I’ll settle for something luxurious containing pure gold. Royal Gold Radiant Serum and Radiant Cream you say? That’ll work.

Once again I found myself in a position reviewing something that has no real English information or ingredients list so these are my blind impressions. I’m going on pure feel and results, which I suppose one should always do. I guess it’s sort of like those dining in the dark restaurants that force you to savor your food without the influence of visual presentation.
I felt like Marie Antoinette using these products. Well, Marie in the height of her luxury. All of the decadence with none of the imprisonment or beheading. The serum is clear with a goldish tint thanks to the, you know, actual GOLD inside. You can visibly see the pure gold flakes suspended within.
royalgoldserum
It has a floral scent that smells very fancy. Really I can’t think of any other way to describe it. It’s just fancy! Even if you were handed this is a plain unmarked tube you would be able to pin this as a high end product. It has a very light texture that absorbs fairly quickly. There is seriously almost no information about this product out there, but from the description on the RoseRoseShop website, this serum is “anti-wrinkle/elastic skincare” which I assume means it addresses anti-aging concerns. Don’t think that relegates this to old ladies only, it’s never too early to start an anti-aging regime. Remember, it’s much easier to prevent damage than to reverse it.
Royalgoldcream
The Royal Gold Radiant Cream feels as fancy as it looks. It has the same floral scent that screams money, and a light airy texture. Again, and even more so than with the serum, you can see the pure gold flakes. It’s very light, it’s not at all a heavy or greasy moisturizer. It does not sit on your skin, it sinks in with minimal massaging. If you have very dry skin you may need a heavier cream than this, I think this would be best for normal to oilier skin types. Aside from gold containing anti-oxidants, I really don’t see exactly what the benefit of having it in your skincare is supposed to be. Some places claim that it stimulates circulation and regeneration but in such a small amount I’m not sure that it could do all of that. I will admit though, the gold gimmick makes this really fun to use. You can’t help but feel regal sitting at your vanity using these golden potions. Even without the inclusion of the gold, these are decent high end products. My skin stayed in the good condition it was in before I started testing them. I think I will find myself coming back to them especially during the warmer months, as they’re very light and refreshing.
Royal Gold Radiant Serum and Royal Gold Radiant Cream both get four little gilded turtles.

MORNING VEIL REVITAL MASCREAM & MORNING VEIL REVITAL TONER REIVEW

morningveilhead

Once again I was fortunate enough to be asked to test out some brand new products from the awesome RoseRoseShop.

I swear RoseRoseShop must have a psychic link to my skin’s wants and needs because I was just thinking how I really wanted to do a sleeping pack to combat all this nasty dryness in the air here. I was also coming to the end of my beloved Benton toner bottle. When I opened the package there was Morning Veil’s Revital Toner and Revital MasCream! Perfect!
morningveilprod

Having just launched in 2012, Morning Veil is a new brand to the Korean Market. However, it’s parent company has other brands you may be familiar with if you’re into the Korean Skincare world, The History of Whoo and Sum37 are two of the most popular. There’s not a whole lot of English language information out there for these products so I’m going to try my best to give you what I’ve been able to glean.

The MasCream was the most intriguing to me. It’s called a MasCream because it combines the benefits of both a cream and a mask. You get a very generous 150ml of product. I like to use a synthetic brush to apply the product. The brush makes it a more luxurious experience, I really enjoy the ritual of painting it on my skin. morningveil You may be wondering where something like this fits in to your routine. Well, you’re meant to use this at night after you’ve applied every product you normally would. So, this comes after everything else in your arsenal. Wash your face, do your toner, do your essence, do your oils, do your emollient, and do your cream. Then, once you’re done with that normal night time ritual, you brush this on in an amount that’s roughly twice the thickness that you apply your night cream. The instructions say to apply to your entire face, avoiding the lips, eye area, and your eyebrows. After you’ve done that comes the easiest step of all, go to sleep. Now, since this is applied in such a thick volume that it sits on your face, I would brush this on like half an hour before actually going to bed. Give it some time to set up, sink into your face a bit, and not be so sticky. It’s not going to dry completely, so take care with how you sleep. It’s not going to ruin your pillows or anything but you could rub it off with your hands accidentally.

It’s texture is a very light, airy, refreshing cream. It’s extremely soothing to apply. Really, it’s a pleasure. Once you wake up it says to rinse your face gently 10 times (so specific!) and then peel the remainder of the MasCream off. It comes off in sort of an ectoplasm consistency. What you’re left with is plump, soft, refreshed skin. Don’t worry if you’ve tossed and turned so much that there’s not enough left to peel off, a couple of times that’s happened to me. I just ended up rinsing off whatever was left on my face, the outcome was exactly the same. I honestly loved the results. My skin was so insanely soft!

It really bothers me that I can’t find the exact ingredients in English anywhere, but I can tell you what it does say it contains according to what little English promotional material I could find.
Newest Mask Revolution!

Latest Peel Mask memory technology
High moisturizing ingredients allowing the skin to be protected like the shell on an egg
Hydrolyzed egg shell membrane, white birch extract, Argan oil and a variety of whitening anti-aging ingredients effectively improve skin brightness, skin exfoliation and moisture.
How to Use:
Apply before bed at night and let it sit overnight and peel/wash off with water in the morning. Cream turns into a mask in the morning that can be easily peeled off.”

So there you have it. I really wish I knew exactly what those highly moisturizing ingredients were and to what degree, but flying blind is kind of fun, at least that’s what I keep telling myself. I really do enjoy this product and am almost certainly going to repurchase it to use once or twice a week. Now, on to the next product in the set, Morning Veil Revital Toner. It claims to have ”

7 multi Effects” which include removing dead skin cells, normalizing sebum production, refining skin tone, moisturizing the skin, calming the skin, and making the skin clear and shining. Again, I can’t find any English ingredients for this stuff, but it is a nice simple moisturizing toner. My skin was in pretty good shape when I began using this and I have to say, it stayed that way throughout. I especially enjoyed using this post workout, because it has a delicate, floral, clean scent in addition to being refreshing and moisturizing. It comes in a huge container compared to most toners, it’s a whopping 300 ml! It’s going to last you forever so it’s a great value for your money. I would recommend this for every skin type. Now remember, Korean toners are not like American astringents, these are meant to be moisturizing, not stripping. I had my husband who has oily skin try this out and it worked just as well for him as it did for me. I have to say, I’m so glad I tried these products out, barring any new information on the ingredients that say it contains crazy things, I’m going to say I really recommend these!Morning Veil Revital MasCream and Revital Toner duo receive four out of five turtles.

MISSHA THE STYLE UNDER EYE BRIGHTENER REVIEW

MISSHAbrightenerthestyle

Concealer, we all need it, there’s no way around that. The thing is, I’ve always hated it. You usually have the two options, a light or full coverage formulation. Light concealers don’t have enough coverage to get the job done most of the time. And while heavy coverage concealers absolutely do work, they cover your purple bags and in exchange leave you with an unmistakeable “Hey everyone, look! I’m wearing concealer! Gaze into my fine lines oozing flesh coloured goo” look. It’s like you trade your discoloured areas for decidedly fake, caked, spackle skidmarks. You can’t win.

Missha The Style Under Eye Brightener is my anti-concealer. It does everything you want a traditional concealer to do, but without the heavy concealer look. I guess the hint is in the name, Brightener. This does a great job covering dark circles and bags through the magic of light reflecting properties. The result is a brightened and very natural looking eye. As with a lot of Korean offerings, the shade selection is extremely limited.  It’s available in only two shades, 01 light beige and 02 natural beige. I chose 01, as I always like to really lighten up under the eye area.

misshabrightener

As you can see here, I’ve got pretty significant discolouration and bags (thank you toddler daughter, and the cold you passed me). This does a great job reducing their impact without screaming ‘OMG CONCEALER!’. It’s subtle yet effective,  perfect for everyday natural looks. Of course it’s not going to take the place of your heavy duty stuff for major blemishes, but for a quick refreshed look I think this is perfect! It also doesn’t hurt that it retails at under $5 and you can always catch it on sale for less!
Missha The Style Under Eye Brightener earns five out of five ‘fake it till you make it’ turtles.
