THE BEAUTY WOLF TURNS ONE!

THEBEAUTYWOLF111
My blog turned a year old last week! I can’t believe it’s been a year already. Much like a marriage it seems like both just yesterday, and forever since I carved out this little corner of the internet. This site has come so far in just a year, I never would have expected this, and I’m so thrilled!
THEBEAUTYWOLFHAPPYBDAY
I never really made much of an introduction post, so I’d like to take this time to really explain the mission of The Beauty Wolf. I started this blog as a way to showcase products that I love, to share with my friends the things that were really exciting me, and put the spotlight on products that actually worked for me. That’s the reason why you never really see negative reviews here. If I dislike a product, it just doesn’t make it onto the blog, because that’s not really my aim here. I’m here more to showcase the standouts, share good deals that I come across, and wax poetic about new favourites discovered along the way. It really gives me life to do this and I’m always so excited to tell you guys about something when it comes across my radar. I try hundreds of products, but only the ones that score 3 or more get featured!

I truly hope that you enjoy your time here at The Beauty Wolf, because I truly enjoy making it for you. The thousands of you that I reach every month mean so much to me, you don’t even know! I don’t see you as a faceless mass, but as individuals, and my figurative  doors are always open to you. I love getting emails from you (btw, holy hell do I have the most beautiful readers!) and hearing about your experiences and I’ll always do my best to answer your questions. Thank you all so very much for reading here. I really do love you all, that sounds so corny but I truly mean it.

And I could never have started this site without some key people, who really deserve individual shout outs:
KERRYTHOMPSONBW
Kerry Thompson of Skin&Tonics, who both showed me that self care was OK, and encouraged me give this blog thing a go. The Beauty Wolf literally would not have ever existed had it not been for Kerry’s words. I never in a million years would have had the guts to put myself out there like this without her encouragement and early championing. My first followers were via her blog and I can’t thank you enough, Kerry, ILU and you’re the baddest boss bitch around <3 Your blog is the gold standard that the rest of us have to live up to!

PEDRAMNAVIDBW
Pedram Navid, my amazing real life friend and poor workhorse of a webmaster who walked my web-illiterate idiot ass through the actual making of this site, listened to my insane client from hell-esque “idk, is there a way to make it less floopy doopy and more you know, idk, square” demands, fielded panicked emails when I would try to do something and would inevitably totally fuck things up, and then save my site from whatever damage I had done. He did all of this out of the kindness (and insanity?) of his heart. Thank you so much Ped, you’re a true friend and I love your face. I can’t wait till we go to Iceland next year <3, beers are on me.
You guys can check out his amazing photography here!

BROOKEBINKOWSKIBW
Brooke Binkowski, my god, girl. My god! I mean, how lucky am I to count amongst my friends an award-winning journalist and writer? A former CNN anchor and NPR contributor, and my friend? Get outta here with that top notch excellence! 😉 You have helped and encouraged me so much when I didn’t believe in myself or my shitty writing <3 I never would have thought I could even try to break into freelance journalism without you! Your mentorship and non-stop lulz are, as the kids say, amazeballs. Thank you so much lady, I am a better person just knowing you <3
Check out Brooke’s import work here!

RICHIEPARKBW
Richie Park, my dear husband. Not only are you incredibly unbelievably hot (hello, you got scouted by an agent from none other than freaking Next Models while wearing a grubby tank top and playing in a fountain) you’re also the most patient, chill, loyal, supportive dude I’ve ever known. You are so crazy helpful in the making of this blog. You do everything from joining me in testing products to occupying our high-strung toddler so that I can do artwork and meet deadlines. Nothing ever phases you, no one ever needs to remind you to keep calm (unlike me, who needs it tattooed on her forehead), you just stay steady rockin’ and handlin’ shit like a boss. I don’t know how you do it. Whatever OS your brain is using, hook me up. It must be all those weights you lift and exercises you do (which btw, is my favourite thing to watch, even better than Netflix 😉 mmmm papi ). You’re the greatest and I love you, or something <3

All of my blogging peers, you guys inspire me! I love reading through my list of you all, every one of you are always so on point. It’s always so fun to see where we agree and disagree, and to see the wide array of products that pass through my feed every day. You guys are killin’ it!

And finally, most importantly YOU, yes YOU reading this right now. Thank you. This is definitely a labor of love. Due to the nature of this site, it costs 100 x’s more to run than it makes any money. I’m not compensated for my reviews or the cost of products, so if you’re going to purchase something, please do so through my links so that I can keep this site up and running 🙂 I love each and every one of my Beauty Pups that comes through here and I’d like to stick around for a long time coming <3 Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Here’s to next year!
XOXO

SUM37 WHITE AWARD BUBBLE-DE MASK REVIEW

sum37whiteawardbubbledemask
Sum37 is quickly becoming my favourite all-around brand. I love their fermented products and their serum and cleansing stick (sadly discontinued) are on my holy grail list. When I read The Wanderlust Project’s review for Sum37’s Bubble De Mask I knew I had to give it a try.

This mask is different than any other mask currently in my repertoire. In fact, I haven’t used a mask like this since my school days studying to be an esthetician. We used to use these kinds of masks, called “bul masks” in class and I absolutely loved them. Back then they were extremely hard to come by outside of salons and I had largely forgotten about them over the years. I was thrilled to find that Sum37 offered a version! Any doubts that this was somehow different were erased the minute I put this on and felt that familiar invigorating tingle.

Straight out of the pump this has a consistency something like a creamy soap, upon massaging onto your face it foams up and bubbles, as demonstrated on the back of my hand here:sum37whiteawardbubbledemaskswatch
The sensation is somewhere between sticking your face into the bubble of a glass of champagne and having a full on alka seltzer tab foaming away on your face. I roped my husband into testing this out with me and he said “It’s like Pop Rocks on my face!”. I wouldn’t go that far, it’s not an unpleasant feeling, like I said, it’s actually quite invigorating, and I really love it.

Once it’s sat on your face for 20 minutes or so you the bubbles start to dissipate and it’s time to rinse it off. I can’t believe I’m actually putting this photo online but here I am, hair in a pony tail, baby hair flying everywhere, no makeup on, glasses on, bedraggled as all hell playing video games in my bubble de mask. I guess we’ve reached that “let it all hang out” comfort stage in our relationship, dear Beauty Pups 😉
As you can see below the bubbles have started to disappear and it’s time for a rinse.
sum37whiteawardmaskon1

Once splashed off you continue with the rest of your skincare regime as normal. Now, the effects of this mask aren’t always immediate, but don’t think it hasn’t worked. You may notice nothing different visually at first, but maybe in the morning you’ll notice a bit more glow. Certainly with continued usage the effects become more visible, but it does work. It leaves your skin more clear and radiant, trust me.

If you’ve never tried a mask like this, you really need to, and this is the perfect selection to do it with.  Sum37 Bubble De Mask is available at W2Beauty where as always you can get $5 off your first order by registering for an account via my link http://w2beauty.com/?s=071087605 and entering code 071087605
This mask is on the pricey side, but it’s the perfect treat for yourself or a loved one, and certainly different than anything else they (or you) already have!

You can also pick up a bottle on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/2015-New-SUM37-White-Bubble-/dp/B00TV1FZDG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1430698555&sr=8-1&keywords=Sum37+Bubble+De+Mask

VELOUR MINK LASHES REVIEW

velourlashes1
Let me start this review with this declaration: I love false eyelashes. No, that statement doesn’t even properly capture my devotion. I worship at the alter of false eyelashes and I take my communion with Duo eyelash glue. And let me tell you, I’ve been wearing falsies for a long, long time. This is not some new found or passing fad for me, ever since I was a mere teen I’ve been obsessed with lashes. For me, they are the single most glamorous thing you can stick on your person. Lashes are the ultimate pick-me-up for a dull look or even a bad mood. It’s really hard to feel shitty when your lashes are on point. Feel free to put that on my tombstone. With this, I found my natural lashes stopped growing and started getting damaged by the cheap glue, I used to use. After trying everything, I found the best eyelash growth serum, which I used to apply every night after taking my lashes off. Not only did I get my length back, but it strengthened them, so I can continue to wear lashes.

In all my years of wearing lashes I’ve tried just about every brand you can think of, American, European, Asian, all of ‘um from every brand and every price point. When I worked as a professional makeup artist I would carry a veritable eyelash buffet in my kit, different brands, and styles for just about any look you could imagine. What I’m trying to say here is, I’m a long time lash connoisseur so there’s not much in the lash world that elicits more than just a “oh, that’s cool” from me. Recently though, I came across a brand that made me go “WHOA, YES MAMA YES”, all caps warranted. After all of these years, I have found my holy grail lashes. I hadn’t heard of this brand until a little while ago, but I’m so glad I have found them now. That’s always the thing with small businesses, a lot of people don’t hear about them, even though their products are normally amazing. Small businesses, like this one, should really consider investing in some marketing so that more people hear about their products as they’re some of the best lashes I’ve used. Perhaps some SEO would be beneficial for this company. They could just get in contact with an agency, like Victorious (check here), to help them increase their website traffic and boost their online visibility. That could really help this company to get their name out there, hopefully, helping them to sell more products.

Velour lashes, a Toronto (yay Canada!) based company founded by friends Mabel Lee and Angela Tran, sell 100% mink eyelashes. Yes, mink, and yes, it makes all the difference in the world. I’m sure the word mink might raise some questions, as well as some eyebrows, but from their website they let us know:
Our 100% natural mink hair is free from any chemical processing or dyes. Velour mink is collected from free-range zoos and recycled during the shedding seasons, it’s then sterilized to ensure it is completely safe for use.

They also claim there is absolutely no harm done to animals to make this product, so animal lovers can purchase these with a clear conscience. If you’re wondering what the benefit to mink is compared to synthetic or even human hair lashes, I find them much more lush and with an ethereal sheen, while still managing to look natural. Well, as natural as you want them to be, these come in styles ranging from ‘totally believable’ to ‘Ru Paul’s Drag Race winner’, so the choice is yours.
verlourlashesdollmeup
These babies are amazing. And don’t just take my word for it, everyone from Queen Beyonce to Anne Hathaway to Jane Fonda wear Velour lashes, and for good reason, they’re absolutely flawless!

The other thing I cannot rave enough about is the lash band itself. If you’re familiar with lashes you’ll know how wire thin most lash bands are. This usually makes them more difficult to apply. These have a study ribbon band, the added weight of which make application so incredibly easy. That’s not to say these are in any way noticeably heavy, they’re not, the lash band is just sturdy as hell, which is something I’ve never come across before. An added bonus to that is, I find it makes you look like you’re wearing eyeliner on the top of your lids even if you’re not, and if you are already wearing liner, it enhances it just that much more. That eye line enhancement is what really sells me on these as opposed to eyelash extensions (that and the fact that you can’t use oil cleanser with eyelash extensions so, bye extensions, no thank you).
youcompleteme
Speaking of that sturdy band, just because it seems so much more hardy than your regular ole’ drugstore lash, that does not mean you can be crazy with these things. They’re still delicate and require extra attention to ensure that they’ll last up to their potential. It’s recommended that you be gentle when removing them, don’t just yank them like you might with a cheaper lash. Also, don’t ever soak the lashes, as it may ruin the style. Another very important thing, do not use mascara on these! Trust me, you won’t need it anyway, but don’t be tempted to run a coat over them out of habit.
arethosereal2

These babies are amazing. And don’t just take my word for it, everyone from Beyonce to Anne Hathaway to Jane Fonda wear Velour lashes, and for good reason, they’re absolutely flawless! Now here comes the part that might leave you with some sticker shock, these start at $30 a pair, with some styles ringing in at $40. However! And I mean a big however, if you are anything like me, you end up tossing your $5+ lashes after a few wears anyway thanks to the breakdown and quick degradation of their shape. Think about how much that cost adds up. Because of the stellar craftsmanship, quality materials, and sturdy band, Velour lashes can last you up to 25 uses. That ends up being cheaper or just about even in the long run. Plus, if you have small eyes like I do, one pair can end up doing double duty for you. Velour lashes are long and more than likely will need to be trimmed to fit your eye. My eyes are small enough that the trimmed part can be used as little corner demi-demi lashes and I use them as such on my “glam-lite” days.

My favourite styles are the dramatic night out Doll Me Up, the uber natural Are Those Real, and the sweet right in between You Complete Me. I’ve pulled some shots of me from my Instagram wearing Are Those Real and Doll Me Up.

dollmeupbeautywolf

I want to leave you with how big of a difference something so small can make. Here I am with one eye done with just mascara, and the other with my You Complete Me lashes. I’m not even done with my makeup yet and it’s already made such a big, yet at the same time subtle and not overboard impact.
youcompletemebeautywolf
I’m hooked on these things!

I’m so happy I gave these a try, they’re my new holy grail lashes. I reached out to Angela from Velour and she was kind enough to share a limited time offer for The Beauty Wolf readers. Starting today, Dec 11th 2014 to December 19th 2014, they’re offering you a very generous 15% off your Velour Lash purchase! The ultimate Treat Yo Self! Just enter the code COCOVELOUR at checkout!

And full disclosure I don’t make a dime off of this code, this is for your benefit only, but you can bet your sweet buns I’ll be using it today to purchase myself some more lashes 😉

SIX BEAUTY GIFT PICKS FOR THE PERSON WITH BARE SHELVES

beautygiftguide
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come across different versions of the “10 beauty gifts for the girl that has everything” article since the holiday season began. That’s great and all, but what do you get the girl that has nothing in the way of beauty? What about the girls and guys who are maybe just getting into beauty and skincare, or that want to get into it and have no idea to start and want to simplify things? Obviously, they’ll need products for skincare and so you’ll want to look at something like the aspect dr skincare range to get them started, but after that it becomes more tricky. Do you go with more complicated choices such as face rollers and massagers, or stick with a basic face mask? Make-up can be another difficult choice as it is such a personal thing because everyone has individual preferences and tastes. Buying for men is even harder! A friend of mine has been looking for a men’s face scrub for a while now but he’s not sure which to buy. There are so many products on the market at the minute! It’s completely overwhelming.

Here are my top 6 picks from my favourite stores for the newbs, or even for the ones who just want to start all over and discover some new favourites all at once!
